Generally lower inertial mass (better acceleration).
Wider footprint, but lower diameter means fit could be better or worse (if not lowered, it works on at least one members car [245/40-17 Toyo T1-S + 17 x 8" +48 SSR Type C]).
Slightly better handling...
Ask Technique if he is still around...
Don't know about the G coupe. It is nice not having a 600 car payment.
Plus I just bought a new winter ride so I'll be doing it up with sound and toys like the rest of my cars.

Depends which "stock" you mean. The TL/CL came out first so in all liklihood, the speedo/odo are calibrated to 25.685 inches (205/60/16) meaning that all Type S come with tires that are 0.2 inches smaller than spec.
I'd say 235/45/17 is clearly fine (25.3 inches) but 245/40/17 might be a bit small (24.7)

The loaded radius and/or revs/mile would be the best indicator of actual speedo error.
245/40-17 might be a tad small, but it has reduced rotational inertia, increased effective torque, and better chance of fitting with wider wheels.
It all depends on what someone is "going for"...
YMMV
