They create a nut on the lug of the wheel that can not be removed using a regular wrench. They require a key that fits into the end of the rounded nut that a wrench can grip and if you do not have the right pattern to fit into the lock nut you are out of luck.
Ask one of these camera nuts to take a pitcure for you.

Wheel locks prevent people from stealing your rims. Instead of the normal tire iron that you'd use to get the wheels off, you have an adapter to the wheel lock that you need to get that lug nut off. So, you have one wheel lock on each wheel and you are safe... so they say.

the lug nut that has a different head is the wheel lock, desighed so that a theif cannot take the lug off without the special wheel lock key... but everyone know's you can get around it.. it works, but only on the amateur’s... but who would want to steal our rims anyway? they're so daym heavy that i wouldnt bother.. lolz
These wheel locks are a total waste of money. First of all, they aren't as strong as your lug nuts. Secondly, a really good thief and partner(s) can have them off in less than a minute and make a clean getaway within 5 minutes easy...mind you, I'm being conservative with the times. And, last of all, I've known and/or heard of people putting on 2 or 3 different sets of wheel locks on their rims!!! Doesn't even slow the thieves down!

Wheel locks are to confuse the AAA guy when he tries to change your tire.
They came free with my car, otherwise I would not have bought them.

IMPORTANT:
part of the reason that theives can steal rims with wheel locks is because the nut for the wheel lock is either in their trunk or their glove compartment so the thief just opens the trunk, by breaking the glass, or opens the glove compartment. what you guys need to do is put the nut in that back seat compartment that locks, under the armrest. hope somebody listens to this advice.

That is the most logical method of removing wheel locks, but I don't think most car thieves work like that. They actually come up to your car prepared to remove them by force...since it's faster to remove them by force than search for the key. Also, shattering the glass would attract too much attention. Like I posted above, even with wheel locks, a good thief and partner(s) can steal your rims in well under five minutes.
To illustrate how easy it is to remove wheel locks:
Some guy I knew lost his wheel lock key. He went to a garage and asked them to remove the wheel lock. Guy says "Sure, no problem". He grabs "tool 1" and "tool 2"(no specifics...don't wanna give any potential rim-jackers any ideas). 20 seconds later, the wheel lock is off...no key required.
My Cousin Vinny!!! what do I win??
