What is this?
Hey i was just wondering if any of you guys know what this is. It was on my rear view mirror about a month now but i thought nothing of it until i came across a thread about a rear view mirror exploding on the tl side. Could this be the signs of a impending exploding rear view mirror?
There are spots on the mirror that is tinted and these spots continuously shift, they have been here for about a month and has not gone away.
here are some pictures of the the curently tinted spots

I'd remove it ASAP. I had mine leak and it melted some of the plastic on the center console that I had to replace. Replacing the mirror takes less than 10 minutes.
... bad times, my Mercedes has the same trouble... pretty common on the 1999 SLK... they have a none adjusting option to save cash... Acura should have a similar option... just a thought...
My original was like that. theres some old threads on it, but we would email the manuafacter (company is on the back, its magna donolly or something like that), and they would send a replacement and you would send your old one back.
The orginal ones had a liquid core but these new replacement ones, and ones they currently put in newer acuras are solid core.

i remember a few years back this was a common problem on the 2nd gen tl side i believe you can send it to a company and they will send you a new one for free i think. it never happened to me so i didnt have to do it. check this out https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...ew+mirror+leak
If you look at the parts fiche there is a manually adjustable mirror for us but its no longer available.
yeah i read on the tl side and it seems that they dont have the free replacements anymore but im gonna email them and talk to them before i purchase a new mirror.
FYI our mirrors use to cost 280$!!!!!!
the auto dim funstion kept breaking and people needed to buy new ones and at 280 a pop people were furious..
only in the last couple years did they make a new version of the mirror (much more cost effective). If u compare it to the oem on it's a tad different. the plastic is a lil cheaper. but who cares honestly. it was 100 after tax from the dealer. which i though was DIRRRRRT CHEAP. so all n all we should be happy

They will price match and then your problem is solved! This is what I did when my mirror started to 'bubble'.

No prob. I heard so many horror stories about these mirrors. Mine had the bubble since I bought the car and the only reason i replaced it was because i couldn't stand trucks blinding me without the dimming feature. The new mirrors they sell don't have liquid in them any more. So its a great one time investment! Let me know if you need help putting it in, I did a DIY on it a while back, but its really easy.

Even the print out? Thats lame. Any new mirrors sold should be without the liquid. Just ask them before you buy to make sure. Or call another dealer, lol.
I'm going to need to take mine out soon. Mines already leaked and I still haven't took it out or replaced and fixed the center console. Dealer asking $400 for everything to be fixed. I told them this is a huge problem and they said there's absolutely no liquids in the rear view mirror. I call BS.
Oh hmm never thought about that.....I hope not because I use transition glasses and if that stuff burns through leather I wouldnt want it anywhere near my eyes.
Its not the same as transition lenses.
There are basically two panes of glass, one glass with the liquid crystals in it, and then the actual mirror glass.
Theres a sensor on the front of the mirror that measures light and when there is a large enough difference in brightness between headlights behind you and the rest of the lighting conditions, a sensor energizes the liquid crystals causing them to shift and dim the mirror.
Transition lenses are just photochromic lenses that darken when exposed to UV rays.
Google FTMFW.
