Went to the dealer...Re: front rotors

I went to the dealer yesterday to get my oil changed and to have them check my brakes. After reading on this forum about warped rotors, I knew that was exactly what was wrong with my car. I started to notice the vibrations around 16,000 miles, and when I took it into the dealer, my car had 18,600. Anyways, the service manager tells me that in fact my brake rotors were warped and that instead of resurfacing them, like many others on here have had done, they are going to completely replace the front pads and rotors. He told me that they were going to try to resurface them but the warping was too bad to do it. I guess it pays to drive a few extra miles after you first notice the vibrations. That's like having 18,000 miles of free braking.

They aren't warped that badly. Its just like everyone else on here who has the same problem. The only time its really that noticeable is when I am braking from above 60. Below that, I don't even hardly notice it.

Rosenthal Acura, in MD, has ordered new pads and rotors for me too. Thanks Acura for 25K free braking!

The rotors are on back order and should arrive in about 3 weeks. I was told that Acura hasn't been manufacturing extra rotors as replacement parts, seeing as how the CLS has only been out for a year and a half.

Any word yet on whether or not there is a tech bulletin for our cars (not just the TL)?

Were these rotors and pads replaced under warranty or how much did you have to pay?

I think mine are warped to, as there is some vibration when I brake at high speed. Even at low speeds, the breaking isn't as smooth as it should be. I have 12,700 miles on mine.

Is this common for dealers to replace this under warranty? I thought brake pads and rotors aren't usually covered under warranty.

Why do the rotors warp so easily anyways? A lot of people seem to have this problem. It worries me that this car has all these problems. I read all these stories about people having to replace their transmissions. I have never owned a car that needed the transmission replaced, especially one that is this new!

Do warped rotors affect braking distance? I mean does that mean it can potentially cause loss in performance and increase in braking distance?

This potentially can result in a lawsuit to Acura especially if someone had an accident because of faulty brakes.

I was told by both my dealer, and by acura customer service, that the rotors are only covered (100% for sure) under warranty up to 10,000 miles. After that its the discretion of the dealership as to whether or not they'll repair/replace them for free.

Regardless of what effect warped rotors have on stoping distances, it would be easier, and make more sense for you to get them fixed now, rather than later.

If the dealers are just replaceing them wont they just warp aging in 10K miles or are they replacing them with something different??? :confused

I'd question the safety of the vehicle if the rotors are warped. Does anyone know if brake distance increases because of rotor warp? It might help my car accident case I am filing with the insurance company.

Here is quote from a MR2 page...

"Rotors: All I can say is make sure they aren't warped. Warped rotors severely limit the stopping distance of a car, and will take away alot of the enjoyment of a track day when you car violently vibrates when coming to a corner..."

link: http://www.bryanf.com/MR2/se2001/track.htm

At the very least, having the brakes wobble is not the best way to keep brake pads in contact with the rotor. Depending on the depth and type of warp, it would be easy to visualize less than ideal contact patches from pad to rotor due to warping. However, to generalize and actually specify or calculate the amount of stopping distance lost (for a given type or amount of warp) would seem to be a problem that would best be tested via experimentation -- I couldn't find any empirical data -- Sorry...

if you willing to pay they can do that, if its warranty it must have oem parts installed
also rotors up to .004 is acceptable anything over that is usually addressed
