Weird noise when turning

Could this be the axle, of CV's? I'm getting a really loud clatter when I'm turning. Only when I'm turning at a traffic light or something and the wheel is almost fully to one side. It sounds like an axle. What do you guys think? I only have 63K miles on my CL. Is this common?

I have no problems driving it. I checked to see if anything was broken, and it looked fine. I have an appointment at the dealership tomorrow morning.

My suspension was upgraded to Tein SS coilovers a while ago, and I haven't had any problems with it at all. I definately don't think it's that, but I could be wrong. Also, we have had a lot of rain in the past 24 hours and I've been through a couple puddles. Do you think this could have played a part?

Any ideas would be helpful. I just hope whatever it is, it can be fixed by Friday.

Is it a constant chatter that only happens until you get the wheel straight?

Not 100%. I really only hear it when I stop at a corner and take the turn. It goes away as the car is getting straight. I'll say if the wheel is at maybe 20 degrees from straight, the noise is gone. More than 20 to 30 degrees, it sounds like my mom's Sentra.

CV joint or bad CV joint Boot... see if the boot is torn or if there is grease everywhere on the lower control arm and underbody of the car.

I wasn't able to get that low to check if the boot was torn. I only looked under too see that nothing was hanging.

Either way, do you guys think it is dangerous to drive? I have to go out of town this weekend, and I'm not too sure if I feel like taking the beater or renting a car. Also, as always I will ask...."Do you think the mods had anything to do with this?"

your suspension is a strain on the boots/joints.

You been laying/burning/smoking the tires around turns from a dead stop?

the car will not fall apart or break down on you... the grease in the boot is there to keep friction down on the metal to metal parts.... try not to cut the wheel all the way to the right or left and you will not hear the noise..

I know it is hard.. but try not to wrench it hard to the right or left and keep the wheel maxed out to one side or the other until you get it fixed...

I had both lower ball joints replaced under warranty at 30k. I had noticed a low speed, high steering angle noise that sounded like a squeak/rubbing thing. Good luck!

If it is a "popping" noise it is your CV shafts. A boot probably got torn and you lost the grease. You should be able to pick up the shafts at a local Autozone or clone for around $45 exchange. If you can turn a wrench you can change them yourself. The dealership will want hundreds to do this. Any tire store will do these for a lot less.

"the wheel is almost fully to one side"
usually when the cv joint or boot goes bad, don't you hear a popping noise through the entire turn?
in my old cls i kept on hearing a clicking whenever i turned from a stop...the dealership never knew what was wrong with it, so i took it to a local shop and it turns out that a few bolts were loose on my steering rack....i wonder how that happened...

Either the CV joint or boot. Or the steering rack.

My jetta had the same problem, both of them unfortunately...

Update

The noise is gone. I wonder if there is just a small rip in one of the boots and some water could have caused that noise. I'm still taking it in, and I'll see what the good folks at Springfield have to say.

Nah, I stopped doing that a long time ago.

Acura said they couldn't see anything wrong and the noise is gone. Oh well....maybe the CL just needed to visit the motherland.

Good to hear that nothing is wrong. Hopefully the noise stays away.

Yeh. Either way. They told me if I hear it again and it gets persistent, to bring it back in and they will cover the replacement under the warrenty.

sometimes it's rust buildup on the inner interior edge of the brake disk that rubs against the back plate while turning (yes it moves a little while turning with that much weight and force applied to). or i also have seen rust chunks (from the disks) falling in the disk hat and gets stuck between the backplate, and stays in the disk's hat for a while and finally falls in the street.
