weight reduction

A big thing with these cars is they weigh 3500 lbs.
What is the best way to drop 100-200 lbs.
Can the battery be put in the trunk to distribute weight better... anything else?

Thanks,
L

Yes the battery can go in the trunk, that's where I have mine. If you want to lose more weight theer are plenty of things you can do. It's a mater if what you want to sacrifice in order to lose the weight.

I like the idea of the battery in the trunk. Actually, battery in the spare tires well along with 2 can's of fix-a-flat. no spare tire, no spare tire jack, and it would still look clean. Also, the battery should be a dry cell. Dry cells weigh like 15lbs less the stock (guessing).

do some searches, members have weighed the stock and aftermarket parts (headers/wheels/intakes/resonator/rotors/pulleys/tires/etc).

let me know what you find out.

Remove AC and all of it's components. Remove door panels and yank the electric window motors (and anything else that looks heavy), install alum. panels. Seats gotta go too (front and rear) and install a single drivers racing seat.

All of the sound deading material and carpet has gotta go. At this point you might as well remove any other signs of the interior, as it'll be in the way of the roll cage anyways. Remove sunroof and associated hardware. Patch hole that's left w/ sheetmetal.

Oh, wait... did you want it to be a luxury car and not a race car ?? ... nevermind... (if you can't tell by now, I'm joking)

Carbon fiber hood should shed a few pounds as will lighter than stock rims and tires (remember aftermarket 18's will almost be as heavy as the stock setup, go w/ something like SSR gt1s in 17s).

Wasn't there a post earlier of some guys who kept stripping their car for weight reduction to improve their track times. They ended up with just the chasis, engine, tranny and 4 wheels, not much more than that.

IMHO, I think unless you guys plan on doing alot of track time (at the dragstrip or on road courses), it's a big waste of time and money for very little gain. But for the hardcore, maybe it's the difference between winning and losing a race.

BTW- to correctly move the battery to the truck so the wires are beefy enough and insulated properly, you will need much larger gauge (awg.) of wire to carry the current for the extra length AND some very thick and durable insulation. Otherwise, you may find your car burning up. That said, the extra length and thickness of wire, plus insulation would probably negate the weight transfer benefits of moving the battery to the trunk, beside being a safety hazard.

I did a post on this a while ago. There are a lot of things you can do, some more extreme than others. Just remember there is a reason our cars have a 63/37 weight distribution (FWD). I have an auto and my car peels out the whole way into 3rd, w/Kumho ecsta's. If you take too much weight out of the rear though, it becomes unstable at high speeds. I had my rear end step out at 90mph. But I have oversized tires as well.

Face it our car is not quick and never will be, if you wanted a sports car you should have gotten one, or at least something w/RWD. Even with a supercharger or turbo, a stock FireChicken Formula w/ a WS6 could take us. With the same mods we would still be on the gas, while looking at his brake lights. Its weight and its traction, one we have, the other we don't. You could go get a '95 240SX gut its interior (ac, seats, whole 9), turbo the engine, throw a roll cage in it, and there you go ~500hp, 2400lbs, RWD, 5spd for about 16 grand. But then you would probably not want to go that fast.

Headers 15lbs less
Remove spare tire 29lbs.
Remove trunk mat 19 lbs less
Smaller Battery 15 or 20 lbs.

These are all reasonable mods that will help alot, I'd also get a AEM CAI.

for a quick trip to the track, remove
everything in trunk spare, board, jacks whatever,
all interior mats,
all CDs (if you have a billion like I do)
front passenger seat,
rear seat (all of if)
random shit in the car (fat women(or men :fag: :ghey:, used condoms, dildos, etc...)

For each 100 lbs you gain .1 sec in 1/4 miles.. to get 0.5sec you need to reduce 500lbs.. that is a lot!

Get better traction is wiser approach.. invest in 16" slick tires and you will be happy!
