Wasted a 330CI this morning...kind of funny...

I was driving to work this morning (and as any morning this isn't my time to race) on the highway (today was the first Tuesday in a VERY long while where traffic was NOT bad ). I was in the far left lane just driving along with an open road in front of me, I was at about 80MPH and passed a 330CI (I could tell he had the sport package since he had the 245s and 225s in the front setup). He started to get next to me by coming into the middle lane and is riding right along side of me. I slowed down to about 55MPH and he did the same thing (I was like WTF?). I waved at him, no response (probably because he couldn't see me too good because of my tint). Then, I shifted it to 2nd gear (fully knowing that 2nd will run out at about 63MPH) from 4th. With the growl from the engine, seems like he floored it. As his car pulls away a little, I get on the throttle and powershift it into 3rd gear. In the beginning of 3rd gear, I was already next to him. 3rd gear goes by and 4th gear approching, I'm about 2 car lengths ahead (by about 95MPH) Shift at about 95MPH (redline) to 4th and take off again. Did this until I reached 120MPH and shut down and let the guy catch up from his 4+ car length loss.

What a way to start the day

Nice kill...3-liter inline six is a fantastic engine, but can't keep up above 100 with a meaty V8.

There's no rules against non-Acuras around here.

Nope, although it wouldn't get blown away, either. They'd be a pretty good match on the track, with the 540 pulling away on the straits pretty easily, but the 500-lb-lighter 330 could keep up in the curvy bits.

I've been on a track with an E34 (previous generation) 540 driven by an 82-year-old guy, and he kicked my ass. Of course, he's a former IMSA / Gruppe B professional racer...

I've got to do a few auto-x runs! Man, I'm missing out.

Stock BMW suspention will roll like crazy, at least on E46s. The only E39 I have track/auto-x experience with is the M5, not too much roll there. I didn't think that I was rolling as much as this though

I'm not so sure of that. The e46 fells much smaller and more nible, but I'm not sure that it could take a 540/6 in the turns. If the 330 has any advantage, it is slight. The 540 has a damn good suspention and lots of grip. Pretty good in quick trasitions too. I think a 540 would beat a 330 on the track. Also, V-8 BMW are blindingly fast on the highway. In the M5, you look down and notice that you are going 110 and didn't even realize it

I'm pretty sure that with drivers of the same ability, a 540 will beat a 330 on most tracks most of the time.

I'm getting quite a bit of body roll, too. I'm going to upgrade the sway bars, and look at some Eibach springs, too, but I don't want to sacrifice ride too much. Pic below doesn't show as much body roll, but I think this was after straigtening out from a turn.

That isn't too bad, but it does look like you are leaving a turn. They took my picture at the point where I was turning hardest, tires still had some turn in though (S-03s). We have the same suspention, so you should be able to get as much roll as me.

is it me or is your inside front wheel off the ground in that pic?

of course, you see front drivers at the track picking up the inside rear on tighter turns, so I guess it isn't too shocking...

I'm not sure, there is a shadow from a lightpost just in front of the tire giving that illusion. It didn't feel like I lifted a tire. I think that it might just be barely on the ground
