Wash job turns into windshield replacement

Some bad news and some good news.

The bad ... While visiting south of LA last week, decided to wash my car. Oregon to LA makes for a ugly ride. It was 90'ish out w/ lots of sunshine. Tap water was 70'ish. Hosing down the car, made several complete sweeps of the hood & windshield ... everything was wet. Then SNAP, the windshield cracked right over the steering wheel. No rock chips; no zits; no bullet holes; just a clean crack top to bottom in an otherwise flawless piece of glass. I'm shaking my head & asking to no one in particular, "WTF?" Reviewed my Karma, rereading my horoscope ... Nothing! Just bad luck. $100 deductible for glass, so more of a pain in the ass and cosmic insult than true tragedy.

The good ... Back home, dropped by the local Acura garage for other stuff and asked about the windshield ... "Normal?" Service manager took one look and said sweetly "Warranty Replacement". That's Butler Acura, Ashland, Oregon. Wouldn't want to try this at our local Chevrolet or Dodge dealers.

You live in Ashland?? What a beautiful place. Lucky guy. Sorry about the windshield, but it all turned ok, eh?? Acura baby, from a former "Found On Road Dead" owner. I love my Blue CL-S.

That seems odd... but I don't ever wash my car in the heat... I wait until about an hour or two before sunset.

Maybe that's the difference???

Wow - only a 20 degree difference cracked it? Must have had a hairline crack or something.

ah, all mfg's warranty glass against stress cracking, if you cannot find a chip along the crack, its considered a stress crack and is covered in the new vehicle warranty, have changed them on gm, chrysler, and mb so far

Hey tsg77, bought my CL-S at Butler. Had it shipped on a flatbed truck to my front door! Make initial contact with them over a year ago when I test drove a Civic Si freaking out the salesman as I drove fast up into the hills from Ashland! Then began periodic phonecalls from Butler wondering when I was going to purchase. At the time was interested in ITR but when I saw CL-S re-thought what I wanted to build. We visit Ashland at least twice a year in fall and spring. Sorry about your windshield. Take care. Bob

Once at home, we were all sitting at home
and watching tv in the family room when we heard a loud 'Craaaack!'. We pulled back the curtain to the porch door, and the thing had TOTALLY cracked. Spiderwebs along the entire door. However it was still standing and there was no hole anywhere in it. It was pretty wild. I'm guessing it was a heat stress thing.
