UR Pulley

I did some searching and read good things about the UR Pulley and I was all set to order one until my friend started scaring me with things like "it'll mess up my oil pump" "its not worth the hp gains".

Can some of you guys that have done it chime in with the good, the bad and the ugly?

Also, it's my understanding that I should expect 10whp... is that accurate?

Thanks in advance guys!

There are hundreds of people running them on the TL and Cl forum with no problems at all. Many 2nd gen TL's with well over 100k miles running them with absolutely no problems. Just look at member's signatures (including mine). If a person is beating the hell out of a car of course stuff like the oil pump is going to go faster, but they'd perfer to blame the pulley (I'm looking at civic and teggy drivers!). I'm sure as you've read, our engine are internally balanced so there no reason for concern. I did a ton of research before I purchased mine and I came to this consensus:

As long as the pulley (bought from a reputable company) is not damaged before install and the install is done currectly you will be fine.

Not sure what the gains are (10 whp sound about right), but you will notice them . I've personally been driving with my UR pulley for 7k miles and I love it.

The stock pulley on my bathroom scale weighed in at 8.48 pounds bare and the UR weighed 1 pound in box with packing foam!

will getting the set make a difference in power/gains?
Is it worth it if your planning on having a stereo system
over 600 watts rms?

UR makes two different crank pullies. One is a lightweight stock diameter one that doesn't underdrive or affect your electrical and the other is the underdrive which slightly underdrives the electrical system.

Definitely worth it. I've had mine on for over 20k with no problems. You'll feel it pull harder towards redline as well as rev'ing a little easier...

HP gains across the entire RPM band for less than $200. Average gains are 7-8 HP. Great mod.

Would the stock diameter lightweight pulley be the smartest choice? Since it does not effect the electrical system.

If you don't have a stereo system over 600 watts RMS you will be fine with the underdrive pulley but you are welcome to get the stock size pulley if it makes you feel more comfortable. The underdrive is very slight, generally around 15% or so, so you won't notice a difference.

For most cars (smaller displacement imports, at least) stock size pulleys will net you more low end HP and not as much up top, where as (like the others have said) the underdrive pulley will net you 3-8 HP across the entire powerband. Probably, the biggest bang for your buck mod you can make after headers, esp. for us NA guys.

Go for it, you wont regret it. I was 'iffy' about it at first, but after reading about many TL owners going over 100K with the pulley installed, and no problems anywhere, I purchased it and got installed two days later. If our engines were not internally balanced then there would be reasons to worry, but since they are internally balanced there is nothing to worry about.

Over 7 months later and it still the best money I've spent on my CL so far! (headers were on the car when I bought it, so they don't count in that consideration^)

installed mines yesterday wit the header, and installed the ice box thursday night. went to the track yesterday but messed up my clutch. Dont really know if it made too much of a difference since i installed so much at one time. I should have waited till I put the intake and header on after 2 weeks or so to install the pulley. As far as qucik revs, it doesnt seem to rev any faster than it did when I put the intake on thursday night. Just my 2 cents, i got a cheap deal on the pulley used and got it installed for almost nothing wit the header so I dont really car unless its slowing the car down.

Are you serious? I thought one of this biggest improvements was that it would build revs up much quicker. I was looking to do this soon on my six speed and I was looking forward to quicker revs. Can someone chime in on this.

The UR pulley is by far the most noticeable improvement in terms of feel/feedback once its installed.

If you think about it -- the majority who have installed/used one swear by them, and they all readily say get 'em without hesitation.

Those who doubt it, you can continue sitting on the fence and wonder all you want about it.

Remember most negative posts on the net are from the very small few who either installed poor knock-offs, or those who had them installed incorrectly (or their cars were crap condition) prior to installing the pulley.

Get UR or go home.

Just my $0.02

I dont know, maybe my review isnt the best right now. I bolted on like 3 mods within 24 hours, lol...I should have spaced the time between each a little more so I would have seen the differences. Oh well. Go ahead and get one.

Is anyone using the lighter OEM size pulley and a Supercharger? I would like to know if there is a noticeable difference before I drop the $$ on this additional modification.

dont think its a good idea for you to get one of those. The guy that sold me mines took it off because he was installing a supercharger

Probably because he had the underdrive pulley, not the stock diameter pulley which is what paclark01 wants.

If he had an Underdrive pulley with a Supercharger then he shouldn't have it installed since it would reduce the amount of boost, but a lighter OEM replacement that is the same diameter should help the car rev up faster. (In theory).

Which is my thought, but I could be wrong. But if the Underdrive and the lighter OEM replacement are bad ideas then I can save myself $200.

I am looking to go with a High Boost Pulley soon, with upgraded injectors and such so I am looking to get as much power and torque as possible, which is why I am inquiring about the lightened OEM diameter pulley.

Moodist I got mine installed separately from all other mods and I could definitely feel an easier rev. It's 8lbs lighter than stock so it's kinda hard for it not to rev more freely.

Maybe he got another brand besides Unorthodox Racing...? As for the internally balanced engines, aren't all engines internally balanced?

Anyway, I will probably end up doing it, but again my buddy knows a lot about cars and he kind of scared me with his caution. At the same time tho, he has never had a CL/TL, most of his experience is with Honda/Acura 4s and Mitsus.

No, not all engines are internally balanced. That's why you have a harmonic balancer. Read all about them here.

Thanks Weez, so we don't have harmonic balancers?

I really love this site for this reason! I really appreciate all the good info I get on here... the forums for my truck aren't anywhere near as helpful

I've had my UR crank pulley installed for over 100,000 miles and haven't had a single problem with it. Go for it! It's an awesome mod.

I don't mean to pick on this comment but you will not see 8 to 12 hp from the crank pulley, the other pullies are just for show by the way.
Show me a dyno of the pullies and the gains before making statements like that, I've dynoed everything and can tell you the pullies will yield 2 to 3 hp max on the dyno.
The car will becme a tad more responsive but don't expect huge gains.

BTW: I have 80,000 mles on mine without issue.

is it 8 or+ to the crank? I noticed somewhat of a change after I put the crank pulley on...
