Jens will know this for sure, but I'm sure the dealer will have to sync the chip in the key with your ignition, otherwise your car will never start.

You can use it to either cut a new key if you loose your current ones or you can use it to set up a remote ignition system (start the car from a remote). I just used my valet key (shaved down) for the transponder.

You folks are too kind thank you.Now about the key. There are two types of keys currently available for our car's equipped with immobilizers. The first is an original manufacturer's key. These oem keys must be programmed into the car's memory. However when you purchase an oem key after it is cut you must also present all of the other existing keys for the car. This is done as the immobilizer must be programmed not only to accept the new key but it must also be reprogrammed to accept all other existing keys for the car.
The other keys available are generic keys.these keys require that when you purchase them and have them cut to fit to your locks that you also present an original key. This is required as these generic keys can be reprogrammed to mimic the unique signal encoded into an oem key.Since the generic key is now programmed to mimic one of your original keys you do not need to reprogram the immobilizer.Jens
