U-Turns

Hey. Does anyone know a way to make U-turns sharper? My friends 330i is amazing @ performing U-Turns. Is it because its RWD? Would that have anything to do with it? Is there something you can change in the suspension or something to make sharper U-Turns?

Is he "bringing the rear out". In other words, is he letting the rear end slide out.

Kinda like a mini-parking brake turn...

BMW's are known for many things including their great turning radius.
Front wheel drive is the reason we are limited. 17" rims don't help either. I think the CL-P gains an inch on the turning radius.

I think our cars are just boats as far as U-Turns are concerned, we have a pretty big turning radius.

I believe it to be due to all the suspension pieces up from. Our cars just don't have enough room for the front wheels to turn in.

Your tire and rim set up will have little effect since they are so close to stock.
The front wheels need to drive and turn. That is where the limits come in. There really isn't anything you can do. CV joints only go so far.

Ok, no special tricks from your buddy.

My old Bimmer would turn around on the narrow street I live on. I now have to find a drive way to make a 3-point turn (no way to do a U-turn in my CL-S).

They limited the amount that you can turn the wheels on the Type-S due to the bigger tires and wheels (the CLP will make a tighter turn).

You would have to be asking for punishment to refit a steering rack (or whatever) to decrease the turning circle/radius.

I may have missed something, but the wheel/tire change shouldn't change your turning-circle/radius (not, unless you go to big and have rubbing problems -- not common.)

Thank goodness for that, I've been in some

A shorter wheelbase allows for sharper turns. As do smaller wheels.

Smaller wheels do not affect turning radius!

The only thing about wheels that affects the turning radius is the width...

If they are so wide that they cant turn all that much in the wheel well... then you wont have as tight a radius.

The CL-S has a wider turning radius then the CL-P because the wheel cannot turn as far... hence the shorter steering wheel lock.

True. What I meant to say was that smaller wheels, like 15" wheels, will usually not be as wide and you'll have a better turning radius. I should have explained that better.

Lets just say this is "characteristic" of all or most European cars, they have very sharp and minimal turning radiis.
