Typhoon, What it Can Be!!
Typhoon, What it Can Be!!
I was looking through some old documents and found my old Typhoon calendar (which my Typhoon was not included) and saw/remembered what a Typhoon could be.
This was a German owner (very rare, less than 100 in Europe), Jochen Kraus, who modded out his with power and looks. This one probably could have turned mid 12's.

I don' think i've ever seen one on the road yet.
Either way it looks pretty nice, and ya can't beat having a truck in the 12's.
They need to bring these back to de-throne the Lightning.

There were only about 4900 made in the two years they were sold with some going to Europe and the Middle East. Even though they are ten years old originally selling for $28k. They now sell for more than $10k with normal miles and some commanding $18k with low miles.

However, you can have several passengers with you comfortably in the Typhoon when pulling off sub 5 second 0 - 60 runs...
I would love to see GM make a new version based on the Envoy with the DOHC 4.2L I6 but add a single or dual turbos. They have already made a prototype which made about 450 - 500 HP and the same in torque onm pump gas, they just need to do a limited run. It has been too long since GM went and did a special like this. The GN's, Turbo TA and the Syclone/Typhoon; but that was almost a decade ago when the last were made. Time to bring out another limited edition and powerful vehicle.

Correct, the Syclone shared the same powerplant and drivetrain, albeit 5 HP less. But it weighed in at 300 - 400 lbs less so was quicker. Many tests put it at 4.9 seconds 0 - 60. With just $1k in mods that could be dropped nearly a second. With $5k in mods you could turn mid 2 second 0 - 60 with 11's in the 1320 ET.

Speaking of GN, My uncle had a GNX, a Grand National Experementel. Shit was fast. He had a 400 shot of NOS and only used it once. After that, he took it out. It was a 87 and i'm not sure how many they made. Like 500 or something. Back then, he had to put down a 10 or 20 thousand dollar deposit for it.

There were 547 GNX made with output of a conservative 275 HP and 380 Lb/Ft but at 2600 RPM all from a 3.8 Liter V6 turbo, which allowed it to turn mid 13's. This was back in '87 but for a price of almost $30k!!!

Cool, please do as I have always liked the GNX/GN/T-Type. Bowling Green Customs, a decent tuner for these cars, was just a quater mile from my old house so I saw them out there all of the time.
Here is a clip from a 1/4 mile challenge between the GNX and a Callaway Twin Turbo Vette. Not bad for mid 80's iron and could certainly put a slap down on many hyped up Supras when both are modded.

I had an 87' GN with all the goodies, 9" 3800 hi stall (lock up), TE-62, full Hooker exhaust w/ 3" DP, Lunati 200/200 cam, 1.6 roller rockers, 42lb injectors, Deltagate wastegate, ported stock heads, O-ringed bock, .030 over, TRW pistons...etc. It was a great car except for the leaky t-roof.
I believe the Typhoon was about a 1/2 second slower than the Syclone. I preferred the Typhoon as you could put I.C.E and haul 3-4 ppl around.
