Angry Trunk Rattling...

It's driving me nuts...!

Each time I the road is uneven or etc., I'd hear something coming from the trunk area that sounds like it is a metal-on-metal rattle. There is no "clanking" sound...it is strictly a rattle.

Anyhow, I think I've figured it out. When my trunk is closed, if I hit the top of the trunk (more towards the spoiler or even ON the spoiler), it creates the same exact rattling sound. I open the trunk...I see nothing on the lid that would suggest something is loose. Then again, perhaps I need to remove the cover to look inside the lid...? I'm going nuts...

Any help would be cool! Thanks!

Could it be your jack and wrench, if not fastened they could rattle. Also in mine in the trunk, near the speakers there is a rattle sometimes, could be something loose there.

No, I checked the jack and wrench set...they are secure. The spare is also secure. The noise is coming from the lid, I think.

open the trunk and tap or slightly hit the trunk lid to make it vibrate. See if thats where the sound is. You can start narrowing it down from there.

The trunk does open normally...so, it may be the brake light! Thanks for the tip!

Okay, I think I've found the problem...there are 2 thin black metal bars that stretch across the top of the trunk right near the trunk's light.

If you close the trunk, I believe these bars also move with the trunk's movement...Anyhow, I hit them and they produced exactly the same rattle as I keep hearing. The question now is: how in the world do I get them to stop rattling? I can't even see what's wrong with them in the first place.

Thanks again, folks!

Thats what I was talking about when I said near the speakers. You might try some electrical tape to help quiet it down a bit.

Thanks for the input and help, guys!

The two think black bars are separated at the midway point of the trunk by a piece of metallic (or is it hard plastic?) object. It seems like a separator/brace. I twisted it upwards so that it forced the two bars apart...anyhow, the rattling has stopped.

I need to do that to mine, I keep my music up loud so those bars are constantly rattling.

Is the brace still connected to the top of the trunk? Mine wasnt and it didnt hold up the trunk will with my spoiler. Im getting it JB welded and buying new springs. Then taking it to the body shop for a install, might have them permanently weld the brace to the top.

Yum, FYI those 2 metal bars are the "springs" for the trunk...

And that's the thing! That brace has disconnected to whatever it used to be attached to...and I'm guessing it's to trunk lid.

Anyhow, the car will be going in for servicing soon...I'll ask the dealership to have a look.

If you look closely, there are 2 holes in the top of the trunk area now, near the light. I drilled 2 holes through the bracket where the 2 holes used to be on the bracket and put 2 screws in to hold it in place. its still kinda flimsy but holding to the top of the trunk. I need to attach it better for the higher tension trunk springs.

Yeah, the metal bracket may break away from the rear deck. I just drilled two holes in the bracket, drilling out the weld spots. Then, I bolted it up with some lock-tite. That thing shouldn't be moving for 20 years.

My bracket had also come loose (from the spot welds breaking), so I drilled it out and put in some Pop rivets.

I dunno if any of that will hold, especially pop rivets. its under some stress and pressure. I'll try JB weld and if that doesnt hold good then i'll get it welded for real. I just drilled holes through the weld point and put two screws through.

Hey guys,

I had a problem with the torsion bars not holding up my trunk lid once I put on an aftermarket wing. The wing looks like stock but a little lighter. Also they kept hitting my speakers. I am looking to take them out and change to struts. Has anyone seen or done that done on a CL??

just look for the two holes at the top where the light is. it should match up with your bracket.

Yeah, that bracket needs to be rewelded back...I've set up an appointment sometime in September to get it fixed.

Thanks for all the help, folks!

why dont you try JBWeld? Its a lot cheaper then to have it welded by a body shop or something. Unless the dealer is doing it for free or something.
