Trans replacement cost?

Looks like #2 is ready to go @ 134,000 miles. Stealership quotes $4700 for re-manufactured with 3 year/36,000 mile warranty. What is going rate for a replacement at an independent shop? Inside and out the car looks as good as it did in March 2000. It is a shame the resale value of these. I have three choices I am considering; 1. Fix it, drive it two more years and sell it then. 2. Fix it, sell it and but a CPO Lexus GS350. 3. Fix it, sell it and buy a new Lexus IS350.

$1200 or so at a decent shop with a 1 year unlimited mileage warranty.

depends on geographic area, but where I live a good replacement from good shop will run 2000-2500.

Thats enough to make you say, f*** Acura, from what my local dealership told me the replacement Transmission should give no problems because they corrected the issue. Im having trouble with mine, Im ready to floor it and drive through the dealership!

Not completely true, but sure, they made some improvements to make it more reliable. Mostly its a new case and internal materials. Internal materials is easy, but independent shop will not give you a different case.

You might want to check out Pep Boys, they give you a 3 year warranty up 75,000 mile. Not sure on the price though.

Basic design is FUBAR! Nothing they do will ever make it last like it should. Also looking at Infiniti G37 sedan or coupe. Just not real sure about Infiniti quality. Only prior experience is with a Datsun B210.

Yea, I agree that the design itself limits the lifetime. Still, the improvements really have helped, but that's not really saying much since the original trans would just auto suicide irrelevant of driving style.

I would check out the IS350 or the G37.

Yes, because a old car with a bad trans should warrant a drive thru the dealer

I love the techs at my dealership. Always do a great job, and the pricing is really good. Plus, they send me coupons for 5$ oil changes every month.

My service manager, on the other hand, is a complete and utter failure of a human life form. His ignorance knows no bounds, but is still so god damn pretentious. I'd definitely drive through the dealership even for a shot at just grazing his leg.

End rant. But yea, you I find it surprising that they told you "Transmission should give no problems because they corrected the issue." They know how bad the problem is, and they shouldn't be making statements like that.

So you can only get the post 2005 "improved" trans design through the dealer?

You don't need a new case. Unless there is damage to it, the case can be used again and again. The dealer doesn't do anything special and there hasn't been any updating to the transmissions no matter what they claim. It's just your local dealership talking up a product to try to justify why they cost 2x as much as the local independent shop down the street for the exact same thing.

No, there HAS been modifications to the design around March 2005. Any independent shop can use the newer internal parts, but they will most likely use the same case design. The dealership would install the newer case design. It is proven to make a difference. It's not a fix, but it's a LOT better than the old garbage.

Trans life is now a moot point. I spent the day test driving new cars. It looks like there may soon be a G37 Coupe in the garage.
