Tranny is going in for repairs... AGAIN!!!

I'm dropping off my car at the dealer tomorrow morning to have the transmission replaced. Now it is even more messed up than before. Before, sometimes it wouldn't engage 3rd gear. Now, in between every gear I have to let off the gas so the RPM's will come down and it will engage the gear. I have no ability to accelerate continuously. ARGH!!

Hopefully it will be like new after this time.

BTW, I am taking it back to Mission Viejo Acura to have the work done. This is their last chance before I start making a scene.

Amir, (when you are done being banned :p) can you email me the letter you wrote to get your way?

I had to get a new trany too. Simply changing the shifting solenoid didn't work. Everything's been OK with the new one so far, but I've only had it back a couple days. Good luck!

Sid, couple of questions..

1) How early of a production model do you have? Just as a reference so we can guage these tranny probs

2) Do you use the sportshift mode often?

The Date of Manufacture (DOM) is 11/00 and I do use sport shift fairly often. That's what it's there for.

I just started a new topic. My friend's '97 CL is having tranny problems too, even after having it "replaced" by the dealer. I will get the DOM when I go home on lunch break

I find the SS annoying sometimes cause of fooken traffic here up north it's far and few between that I get a nice open road where I can use the SS... I hope tranny problems don't carry onto the later production models, mines is 5/01.

Had a tranny issue the other day...I was coming off a freeway ramp and i threw it in 2nd and accelerated...as the tach reached 6-7k i pushed up on the SS... i thought it switch to 3rd then all of sudden i hit redline and fuel cut-off...so i tried to shift to 3rd again....still stuck in 2nd...i was like WTF...then shifted into D....rpm still at 6-7k...im shitting bricks at this point...i was about to pull over but decided to switch to neutral...did that and put it back in D and everything was fine...no problems since then...but damn nearly had a heart attack...i hope that was just a temporary state of confusion for the tranny

Were they willing to work with you? Or did they give you a run-a-round?

Ouch, Sid.

Does that mean you're not going to make this Sunday's drive?

Or does that mean you're going to thrash the dealer's '99 CL?

Well... the dealer says I should have my car back by the end of the week. I hope that is the case, because I would hate to be forced into 'thrashing' the loaner. :p

I'll be there.

Yeah, I took it to Rick Case, didn't even bother with the asshole Miami dealers. They were cool about it, no hassles whatsoever.

Well... I got my car back and the transmission seems to be working properly for now. They installed a new tranny and torque converter. My hunch is that the torque converter was the culprit of my shifting problems. The only difference I can feel so far (other than no missed shifts) is that it is a bit more difficult to move from auto to SS mode. Almost like where the shifter rests when in D5 is a little too far toward D4, so when I try to go to SS mode, I have to get it over the hump by moving the shifter up (toward neutral) and then over. Maybe it's just me. Maybe it just needs to be worked in like my last tranny. We shall see.

I also had them look at my tailpipes AGAIN to hopefully align them better. For those of you who were at the last So Cal BBQ, you saw that the tail pipes may have just been bent at different angles. I mentioned this to the service manager and today he told me they measured and it was all even. He said it must have been "an optical illusion". I'll measure them and if it is in fact off, I'll be looking into this further with the people at the next level up on the food chain.

Pic of the tailpipes:

SidViciuos,

Every CLS I have seen has a lower right tailpipe. Have your dealer measure it again and adjust. Good luck!

They should not have given the car SS if the transmission cannot handle constant use of it. Duh.
Whether or not you use SS all the time should not be an issue - you should be free to use it as much as you want.
As for the torque converter on our car - I hate it. It always locks up at bad times like when I'm trying to coast down a little hill after a stop sign. Argh.
