top speed of a six speed 2003?

The director of my department asked me "how fast will this thing go?" Dunno, I said, but I will find out. On the way home in sixth gear I noted the car is doing 70 at 2,500 rpm. Dividing 6,900 by 2,500 and multiplying by 70 mph, the answer cam back at 193.2 mph! Not possible, I say, due to drag. Anybody know how fast this thing will go? I'm not willing to find out, too many cops around here. Maybe someone in Montana can give us a clue.

Awesome theoretical number, though.

I believe that there is a limiter that will stop you, and I think Tom is right about the speed.

The speed limiter is set for 148 MPH. Anyone know how to re-program?

Top speed electronically limited to 149 MPH, stock Michelin tires are 'V' speed rated (149 MPH), go figure...

Outside of the SUVs and minivan, I didn't think any Honda had a speed governor in their USDM cars. However, maybe the HKS speed limit defencer will override the governor:

Kind of a good thing, huh?

I had the auto version up to 130 MPH once. By the time you hit 120 MPH, there really isn't much acceleration left. I figure it would be a really long haul on a flat stretch to hit 149.......

Have you had your 6spd up that fast? I have had mine to 135 on two occasions and it seemed like it still had a bit left. I definately feel that the car still pulls strong after 120. I haven't found a place here where the road is long enough, level enough, and PO free enough to attempt a top speed run. I have heard there was no limiter on the 6spd, anyone know?

Both the 6-speed and auto should be limited to between 147-150 mph. It's due to the v-rated (149mph) tires.

I have a CL-P and had it up to 145...I would think CL-S's could do better. By the way, it was still pulling strong in 4th gear. Somebody try it in a 6spd.

I've had my auto bounce off of the speed limiter. In 4th at 5K the thing just PULLS to 148. When in the low cams the car is hard to get up to the max speed. But when in VTEC watch out u will be suprised as to how hard it pulls. Kinda like installing headers and feeling what u got from them in 4th on HW speeds.

_______________
i only did 140 once and i couldve gone faster but was kinda scared of cops..... my car pulls hard all the way to 140. maybe cuz i have I/H/E/Pulley

i tried on my friends AV6 coupe on the way to vegas once... the acceleration just died after 110...it took FOREVER for me to reach 120MPH in that accord....

I've hit the 149 mph mark racing a Mustang GT ( i was a car and half ahead at this point to. I'd love to see what the top speed is without the governor and with better tires on a real big oval track.

I'm sorry sir, but the drag coefficient is for the CLs 6spd is actually .32! again too little HP, and too high a drag coefficient to go above 150, let a lone 193!! my source? found on the NET curiously enough:

NOT meaning to Brag or anoy anyone here but the 2003 honda accord coupe's drag coefficient is .29, which places it in some rare company such as:

BMW M3
LS1 none Z06 corvette
infiniti G35 w/wo aero package

Its the honda/acura with the lowest cd ever at .29.

i think our cars will push the limits of 170+....when i had it up to 145 the other weekend, i was in 5th@6000rpms....i may fluctuate a little cause i was paying attention to the road, but i still had some of 5th and all of 6th....so it would be interesting to find out

I doubt it. You'll never get into 6th gear at that speed. As soon as you hit 6th, speed will start to drop (ever tried it with the auto? 5th gear offers nothing at that speed).

Not yet. I was impressed how well our '01 CL-S handled at that speed though. I suppose the air pressure really loaded the suspension, because she seemed pretty solid still. Kind of glad I slowed up though. Met a cop 3 hills later!

Wires,

The reason why I would think that 5th in the auto would suck for power is because Acura/Honda makes their last gears crusing/fuel economy gears. From what I've been told is that in the last gear the fuel gets leaned out some from better fuel economy. Maybe thats why the car sucks in 5th, and 6th for the stick.

And ur damm right. My CLS would just plant anywhere above 130. The damm thing felt like it was riding on rails. All that downforce from such high speed really helps.

It's actually just the ratio thing.

The engine puts out 232 ft lbs of torque. As you go through the gears, you'll get the following torque to the wheels (at 5000 RPM) (stolen from posted dynos):

1st - 725 ft lbs
2nd - 425 ft lbs
3rd - 314 ft lbs
4th - 231 ft lbs
5th - 189 ft lbs
6th - 112 ft lbs

5th gear in the manual is about 1:1 (0.976:1 actually), so you'll get most of the engine power to the ground. When you hit 6th gear it's 0.771:1, so the engine needs to spin less to make the wheels spin more (great for fuel economy, but you lose major torque to the ground). As you can see from above, the 6 speed is only putting a measly 112 ft lbs of torque to the ground in 6th (which will be similar to the auto's 5th gear).

So, to make her pull more in the last gear, you need to up the HP/TQ at the engine....
