Tire Rack won't sell me 225/40/18s...WTF
I called them to purchase a set of tires. The first thing they ask is what type of car do I drive. I told them a 2002 CL Type-S.
They told me I can't go with 225/40/18s and they will not sell me any tires in that size. I told him the Yokohama Prada Spec 2 in that size is a 92 load rating. The stock Michelins are a 93 (215/50/17)
He comes back and says the Prada Spec 2 only supports up to 1389lbs per tire I need at least 1400. They will not sell me the tire because of the 44lb difference.
Is someone smoking crack over there?
What am I suppose to do? Lie to them about the car I drive?
and I thought someone said they did price matching...the salesman said "no".

Chikai,
They tried the same shit with me. Just call back later and you'll get somebody else. Otherwise just lie. I had a friend who said the tire/rims were for a show car and it wouldn't be driven.

Ummm, last time I checked you don't have to have them install and mount the tires. "We won't sell you tires in that size..." What if you just wanted a set of tires to sit in your garage? Or to look at? or to have as show? Sure its a liability thing if they mount and install the tires, but not just purchasing the tires.

fukin bullshit!!!
here...call Blake at x621...he'll hook u up
my Pirelli's weren't recommended either, and i didn't even realize it til i was ready to order from him, and it's simply "we can't guarantee and warranty the tire b/c it's outside our recommendations"

That's why I will not buy anything from them. Thry tried that with me on my car before the Acura 2 years ago. I have boycotted them. I called 3 times, all different people, they all said the same. They noted it in the computer & on the 4th try they had it on record.

ROFLOL... did you ask for Larry like I told you to do?... Oh man this thread cracks me up... Someone has got to be twisting the story around here... My load rating is an 88 on my SO3's and I did not have 1 problem ordering... Maybe they put a new rule in affect.. maybe they got sued or something.. who knows, someone ask the next time you call and report back...

When I got my rims with tires about 10 months ago, they tried the same thing with me. I ordered a non- reccommended size, 235/40/18, and they just called and asked me if I was sure. Just lie.

hey Titan19...does that size rub w/ a drop? Which tire did you get? And what's the size of your wheel. I think the 235 wasn't recommended for 7.5 inch width wheels.
Oh and if you got pics...that would be great.

I tried to get some tuner lug nuts from them but the guy wouldn't sell them to me because I happened to mention I didn't get my current wheel package from them (I did last time though).
So because of that he said they didn't want to be responsible if the lugs didn't seat correctly.....what a copout

I got my 235/50-17 tires from tirerack (salesperson=Clay) just a few weeks ago. He said that 225 series is the max size recommended for the Acura CL-S (obviously reading off his computer screen). I told him that I wanted to stay in spec with the odometer/speedometer and get a 235 series. He gave me a one sentence disclaimer statement, but otherwise didn't care.

ok...here's the verdict. I called tirerack back, and talked to Larry (per Smitty's suggestion). He first told me the 225/40/18 won't be able to support our car. The OEM tires recommended by the manuf can support up to 1433lbs. The next recommended tire in the 18 inch wheel size is 225/45/18 but that only supports 1356lbs.
So I told him the 225/40/18 Yoko Prada Spec 2s can support 1389 lbs which is higher than the tire he recommended. He's like "ooookay..."
I'm really questioning these guy's knowledge of their tires. Whatever, the tire is on its way and with a warranty packet too.
so guys in the future you have problems with tirerack, talk to Larry and he should square you away.

well actually, they are doing what they are supposed to do. These tires aren't approved by the DOT to support the CL. So they are just doing their job. Sure you can put them on and things will be fine. They just aren't approved. It's like taking a tire that's rated at 140 mph to 150. You can do it and 99.9% of the time nothing will go wrong. But the tires aren't rated for that speed.

He explained to me that the requirement is based on an extra 2000 lbs on top of what the car weighs (3500lb). So at minimum the tires should support 1375lb per wheel.
The OEM tires can support a total of ~5732lbs, which is very like the conservative Acura (yet the OEM tires still gets bubbles :scratch)
what I don't understand is...when in the world am I going to have an extra 2000lbs in my car. With four adults w/ an average of 175lbs per person, that's like 700lbs. Then add say 100lbs of luggage, that's still under a 1000lbs.

I don't think DOT approves anything. In fact the guy at tirerack specifically said the weight requirement was a "recommendation" from Acura.

I'm sure EricL can post the math for us.

They did the same thing to me too with my 03. Didn't want to sell me 225/45/17 because of the load rating. Discount Tire would though -- you just have to be comfortable that Acura might not honor your warranty because you have used a lower load rating than they specify. Certainly your tire manufacturer won't!
