Tint and Rust

So I tinted my car like 3 months ago, and I noticed that the tint never sticked well over the dots (not big deal).

But something I have noticed maybe a month ago, was the appearance of kinda a dark orange color like between the dotted area and the tint, only on some parts. I went today to the tint shop and of course the guy who is supossed to be the "expert" said that it has happened in some cars like the Beetle, but he have never seen that in a CL. So he suggested taking the tint only for the dotted area and clean it, and just leave it with no tint.

Of course I didnt let him take it out, because by warranty they should take all the tint If I am not satisfied. I am aware of this thread which I found using the button.

So my question is, should I let them take out the tint on the dotted area, or try again and let them tint again with the suggestions you have mentioned?

And by the way, that dark orange color was rust - said the "expert" - which might've been caused by a chemical reaction between the water they have used and the dots.

Comments are very welcome.

I had my windows RE tinted one month ago with Quantum (metalized tint) . What my installer did for the black dots at the top of the back window was apply a black vinyl strip across that part, he gave me the option to "try" and tint that area or just leave it with no tint. He told me that tint does not stick to our black dots very well because they are too thick. The vinyl strip makes it look very neat and not jagged like those black dots on cars can produce. May want to ask him if that is an option.

Wow…..That’s horrible and I’ve NEVER seen anything like that on a tint job.

I would almost venture to say that’s MOLD, not RUST.
Maybe the place that did it has a problem with their water supply.

Other then that I have no idea what to tell you, but if that’s between the tint & glass it’s gonna have to be removed from the car.

That's sucks. Have them remove it all, clean the window, & re-apply.

Here is your answer young grasshopper.........

When people tint your car that DON'T know what their doing they sand the dots because they think that will make the tint stick better. The dots are actually metal with paint over them. Anybody with common sense can see that this will cause a problem. When they wet the area to apply the film the water gets trapped in there with the "fresh" metal and soon rust appears. Hope they do something for you but don't count on it.

Like about 2 months. Yeah it sucks. I have the opprotunity to get it replced though, but i want them to do it right. SO any additional suggestion will be helpful, so I print them out and give it to the tint shop. THey usually do a good job (my other car has 2 years with same tint - no problems), but i dont know wtf happened this time,

Listen to me please.....

If they retint it with out putting protection over the dots the metal will rust again. The reason they said they have seen this problem with bettles is because that is the most common car with metal dots.

I agree with that. What do you suggest for protection?

If you have LLmar tint with the lifetime warranty, you can go to any dealer & have it replaced. If you don't trust them to do it right.

They suggest that vinyl should be applied.

I thought they would recommend vinyl but I thought you should get the suggestion straight from the tinters

For sure I will retint. I am collecting as much info as I can and decide which is better.

I wont accept vinyl yet. The day that my car was tinted was all rainy and I guess that the dotted area didnt dry properly.

I will suggest the tinter to just redo the job (as he told me to choose) and scotch bright the dots.

I am not that concerned about the dots not sticking well, but I am concerned about the rust.

Someone did say that using glue also makes these brown/orangish/rust colored places in the matrix area. And that is valid, thus i remember seeing extra glue on the dotted area when the tint was new.

I am scheduling a retint appointment on friday (I will be arriving late to work ) and I will be present this time.

Thank you all for your help.

I worked at a tint place for five years and have sanded the dots before as well as on my CLS and it didn't rust like his. I'm not saying your wrong about sanding the dots but maybe they used sand paper that was to rough. When I worked for the tint shop we used the finest sand paper we could find when we did this, so from what I've seen working there for 5 years and hanging around the shop for the last 3 years is that they sanded too much of the dots off down to the metal as spdy0001 said. But alittle sanding doesn't hurt.

The tinters where you worked must have known what they were doing, I stated that his place probably didn't know what they were doing and exposed the metal.

So I went to the tint shop and they changed the tint completely. It took like 3 hours to take it out (making sure they didnt mess with the defroster lines).

They havent sanded the dots this time neither the first time, although now I can see from the outside a much better job (all dots are sticking very well).

The tint guy was telling me that he had done many CLs before with no rust problem, so it was odd.

But it any case, I will keep posting if it happens again.
