Tint help - Those damn dots

I'm supposed to drop of my car this evening for tint and decided to go with a 35% sides and 20% back combo.

I hear that there are some problems with tinting the "Dot-matrix" (Stripe of dots on the back window).

How many people got theirs tinted and how does it look??

I have it tinted over and it does not look too bad unless you really look for it.

Mine looks good, although the tinter warned me ahead of time that sometimes it sucks. It's a hit-or-miss type thing. Try to get it done from someone who has experience with TL/CLs.

I have mine stop at the dots. I have seen others that had tint put over the dots and it looks kind of messy. You can't even tell the difference with the tint not being there because the dots make up for it.

What happens to the tint when you have the rear defroster on? Wouldn't that melt the tint or somehow screw it up?

Not sure I think they solved that problem like 20 years ago.

It will almost definately bubble if you put it over the dots. But, it will look silly with tint that dark if you do not go over the dots. Tough call on that one.

Ask anyone that has seen my car. It looks right. I will try to take some pics when I get home.

I went to a shop recommended by the dealer I bought the car from. I put 20% back/30% rear sides. The shop said the dots were a problem up until after 1999. The dots are not as steep on the sides now so the tinit sheets will latch better. I just got it done last weekend and it looks sharp. The defroster lines will have no bearing on the tint sheets. The only thing I have noticed is the sort of doubling of lights from the angles of the sheet/defroster lines. I know this is common with almost all tints, regardless of who did it, so I am learning to deal with it. I have been extremely happy with the tint, and it has no bubbles the last i checked... I told the shop I would be extremely unhappy - to the point of not paying, if there were excessive bubbles. He responded by doing a great job. good luck.

thanks folks!

I ended up tinting over the dots (and around the break light - cuz I didn't want them to remove the rear deck). So far it looks seamless at the dot matrix area - but we'll have to let it dry a bit more...

I'll keep you updated as this is a common issue w/most tints & cars!

I'm planning on getting my car tinted next week, I have a 1997 3.0CL, so what you're saying is that these dots are more problematic on mine that on the 2001 CL-S? The guy at the tint shop said that he could tint it, and stop at where the dots are and put a black strip... Dunno if that's a good idea.
