Bad paint work! Please **HELP**

Ok guys... As some of you might remember I was involved in a car accient a few weeks ago. I have my car back now and I am overall happy with the body work that was done, BUT the paint just doesn't match.

I have been able to figure out exactly which part of the car the bodyshop repainted even though they didn't tell me simply because the parts they painted don't match. The only parts that were damaged where the hood and the passenger side fender, but in order to do their "blending" I can tell they repainted the hood, passenger side fender, passenger side door, and even the driver side fender.

I am hoping you guys will take a look at the attached photos and back me up... I have already had a couple people from work notice this and comment to me that I should have the body shop repaint, but I wanted to ask you guys as a final opinion. I think the photos show what im talking about... I noticed some of the have blur spots, im not sure what is up with that other than my friends camera lens must have been dirty?

First I used photo shop to mirror the photos so that they face the same direction even though they are opposite sides of the car. I think the side by side compairison show the bad paint matching pretty obviously.

An "approved" shop did one of these on a small dent (with scratch) on one of my wife's door panels. They tried to show the car in the twilight. I made them take the car inside and turned on the florescent lamps, and some flood lights. Lets just say, it looks like your shade mismatch problem. (Her's was just the door and burgandy)

We left the car -- I refused to pay. It was fixed and repainted perfectly.

I think they screwed-up the color matching. The door and front panel look like they are different shades..

Can you find some artificial or other light condition(s) that really exacerbate the difference -- and/or give them a first hand tour?

Make 'em do it right.

Thanks Eric... to answer your question yes... I notice the bad mismatch most when its overcast but still bright and when the side of the car is viewed at an angle. Its pretty obvious in bright light at an angle as well. Im going to take it back tomorrow, hopefully they won't give me a hard time about it.

What would you guys consider the best way to fix this problem? Repaint more of the car with the paint they already used, or redo the parts they painted with new paint that matches the original paint better?

Thanks!

Why ruin the rest of the car? Have them repain the mismatched areas with OE paint that they supposed to use. It really shouldn't look like that. Painting a car isn't brain surgery. What is the name of the body shop?

Go to your local paint dealer, Dutch Boy or Siperstein or even Home Depot. I know there is a machine that can get the exact color makeup of an object. It works a little like this: Imagine a paper cup. Now turn it upside down on the hood of your car. Inside the cup it's dark, right? Well now a light is emitted from the inside of the bottom of the cup shining toward the hood of your car. You now have your first reading of the color by sensing the light reflected and the color percentages and wavelengths of them. Now you do this to other parts of the car. They SHOULD all match but they won't because your car is messed up! Use this as proof if you can to show them there is a problem.

Silver is a bitch to color match. Especially if the car gets left in the sun a lot. I hope they do better the second time...

They did not blend the color to match the rest of the car. I agree take it back and make they fix and take to a manager about it.

Thanks for all of the suggestions guys.

Thanks Mercury, Mine is satin silver as well. That would be cool if you could give me the color information they used for your car.

NightHawk: The name of the body shop was Chantilly Auto Body, in Chantilly, VA. Im not putting them on my "will not recommend" list yet... the body work they did was pretty good and paint work was clean (no over spray onto plastic) compaired to experiences I've had at other places... so as long as they can get the paint color right I will be happy.

I will post the numbers tonight for you! I have them printed from the shop on their paper. I can't scan them but I'll post them the way they appear on the sheet. Any body shop will understand them.

A bit more advice.....not only did they f*** up the matching, but they should "blend" into the joining bodywork for a seamless appearance. Why? The color should be really close, but the orange peel and metal flake will not be..... and the refraction will still make the color look different.

If they do this, I know you will not see any difference whatsoever.

Yep I agree... btw what is orange peel? Also... for an update on this I took the car back to the body shop today and they agreed the paint didn't match right. They painter offered to first call around to other body shops and see what they use on this color/car. And if that didn't help he said he would blend the paint the lenght of the car on both sides.

Then I get call at work saying there might be an issue with the "paint code" on my car. I started a new thread about this at:
