So I was driving today and all of a sudden I hear a snap noise and my motor shuts off. Almost like it stalled, but at 70 km/hr. I got it to the side of the road and tried cranking up again but the motor wouldn't turn.

Got it towed to my boys shop and he did a quick check and told me the timing belt likely snapped. I wasn't even surprised, the guy I bought this car off was a lying scumbag who told me he replaced the clutch & timing belt. Well, the clutch went a couple weeks after I bought the car, and now about 15 months later the timing belt has seemingly snapped. Stupid on me for never getting it inspected, but still.

Now, after doing some searching on the boards.. its very likely I have some bent valves from this.. so either I replace the valves as well or find a new motor.

If I go through with properly rebuilding everything, I figure now would be the time to do the 3.5 build. At the same time, I dunno if the CL is really worth dumping the cash into at this point. If I just replace the belt, would the motor run like shit with the bent valves? Cause I'm contemplating just going cheap fix then get rid of the car.

Decisions.. what would you guys do? CLS6 with 210k on the dash. Also fwiw I have a decent amount of money dumped into the car of which I don't expect to recoup any.

 

If the belt snapped you might've got lucky that all valves closed before contact.
but, after re starting the motor would've cranked fast.
If it would not turn over and it is because of a snapped belt you might as well get another motor.
The cost of pulling it apart and fixxing where ever the binding is would possibly cost even more than just swaping out the whole engine.

First thing look at the belt.
Not sure if you can see it threw the timming peek hole but if not just remove the front cam gear cover first for a look.
Put on another belt and then get some compression readings.
Then a leak down test to verify if it's intake or exhaust valves on what cylinders you have problems with.

If you don't do your own engine work you will most likely be better off looking for a motor.

 

If you wanna go cheap just buy a used engine with less miles, while the engine is out do the 105k maintenance on it and call it a day. Check your local junk yard for one. These engines are pretty solid if kept well maintained.

 

Shit luck man. Easiest thing to do would be a new 3.2 motor. Or you could throw 3.2 heads on the 3.5 block.

Well , the CL is hit miss . I'm sure you'll love it as a 3.5 , but put the 3.2 in it to sell it imo man .

^might be. can't say for sure but it just went out on me at 210,000 km, equal to 130,000 miles. if the service was supposed to be done at 105k there's no way it should have broke at this point. so it's very possible the timing belt was never done.

 

You can't trust peoples word on these things. Require paperwork or assume it never happened.

What to do depends on you, your motivation, and who will be doing the work.
You have to sort out the engine to sell it anyways so might as well buy a cheap used engine and swap it in. Then decide whether to keep or sell.

Belts aren't just about mileage. Age is a bigger wear on it rather than mileage. It's suggested at 105k miles or 7 years which you're well over. A belt with 200k miles in 3 years will show less wear and cracking than one with 20k miles in 10 years as rubber gets brittle and cracks after prolonged periods of time, especially with little use.

Good luck. Make sure that used engine is in okay shape - compression test?

 

Front cam sprocket and the 2 ckp sensors behind it, and the crank gear for the timing belt and the sensor and you will have to take your engine harness and put it on that motor.

 

3.5 build would end up being more rewarding for you... of course at a different price bracket.
