Throttle Position Sensor? Ridiculous Problem!
Throttle Position Sensor? Ridiculous Problem!
Any input welcome, Sorry if I ramble.
So this happened once before and i just wrote it off to a sticky throttle. I was coming home last night and the road was about to merge from two to one lane. I accelerated to pass a slower car (pretty quick accel) and when i took my foot off the gas, to my horror, the car continued to accel! I put the car in neutral pulled off the road. It felt like I was breaking against the motor even while in neautral. The car was bouncing off the rev limiter until i turned it off. I put the car in park, let it sit, then turned it back on to have it start bouncing off the rev limiter again.
So I took a minute to collect my thoughts and then pulled the batt terminals. Let the car sit for about ten minutes and hooked it back up and turned the car on to the same problem. Now I got no codes or anything else while the car did this.
Next thing I did was unplugged the TPS and started it back up, now of course codes started flashing, and the car ran like shit. Plugged it back in and let the car run for a bit and try to re-learn or whatever. Turned it off and started it back up with no problems! Don't know if i just interupted the problem or narrowed it down to the TPS. I couldn't get the car to do it again on the rest of the drive home.
This has only happened one other time. Both times it was when i went to accelerate hard and then let off the gas to slow down the car just kept going like i had it mashed down.
All the info I can think of that might help to answer your questions:
1. It was cool out, maybe 73ish
2. I was accelerating pretty hard (almost full throttle)
3. Once in neutral car bounced off rev limit at 6K
4. No codes at first until i pulled plug to TPS
5. Reset codes after car ran fine and nothing popped up
6. I have a 2001 Acura CL-S Automatic with 119K on it
7. Throttle cables were working just fine, nothing stuck or twisted or bent

With the car off, have someone press on the gas pedal at diff positions while u look to see if it gets stuck at any time. I know u said that the throttle wasn't stuck, but sounds like it. Bc in order for the car to accelerate like that the throttle needs to be open, so it would have to be stuck open some how. Tps wouldn't be able to do that, let alone give that much power with a closed throttle. Something getting stuck.
Did u have ur cruise control on when u went to pass that other car? That might have ben stuck.

x2 to a stuck throttle plte. the TPS cannot control throttle position it can only sense where it is.
and its not your IAC because that would cause the car to iddle up and down.
i would check for a crimp in the cable or something behind your accelerator too

sounds stuck... mine sometimes gets stuck but on closed position (sometimes its kind os stuck or rough and have tos press hard to step on it). I asume there is nothing in between carpet/pedal o farther up by pedal "lever". Not sure about return springs (how many are there) but would check those too. The main throttle "wing" type valve might be getting stuck inside body (same way IAC valve needs cleaning sometimes)... this is what comes to my mind. Nothing (except cruise control) will pull your throttle.

Thanks for the input guys.

? I know where/what the butterfly valve is, but not the throttle plate.
I would check on the outside of the throttle body first because I actually had this problem once, but nothing a small amout of wd 40 wont fix, ended up being the spring where the throttle cable hooks up to was just really dirty, so I cleaned it and oiled up, havent had a problem since, but I do check it regulary since there is just so much dust and dirty in the midwest from construction being thrown around.
Even with a quick clean of the exterior on the TB I dont think it would hurt one bit to pull the TB off and do a full clean with a good TB/Carb cleaner and possible let the "hardware" sit over night in the solution...
I had to do this on my LS400 and what a Fuq'n difference it made,
