Question Throttle body:replace or not

My 2001 cl type-s went into the shop today for RPM probs, VSA light and CEL both on. The service guy said I needed to replace the throttle body due to the sensor being an issue. Should I replace this part or try to clean out the TB? Thanks for any insight.

All he said was the one welded inside the TB.

I am not sure if it is riveted on or screwed on. Is the part number for your throttle body 16400-PGE-A02? If so how much for it?

The TPS is riveted on. I would call King Motorsports. I bet they had to remove it to bore out the TB and reinstall it. They may be able to help you. Maybe you could kill two birds with one stone somehow and get at TB bore at the same time instead of buying a whole new TB. You could also get one from Car-part.com

It is not riveted on, it is screwed on. You have to make a slot in the ends of the screws so you can use a flat head screwdriver to get the screws out.

Search ebay for TPS sensor Acura TL and you'll find them for ~$50.

https://acurazine.com/forums/2g-tl-1999-2003-98/need-throttle-position-sensor-tps-688658/

The new one comes with new screws so don't worry about destroying the screws on the bad one.

The new one comes with instructions on how to install and tune the TPS.

Actually thats what I was talking about. on HT we always said the us TPS's were riveted on and the JDM TPS's actually had torx screws. I actually think they are screws that the heads break of when they are torqued.

I knew you can cut a slot and spin them out.

Yea, they're all screwed on. But some look like a rivet. Just take a dremel, slice a groove and unscrew. I've had good luck with the TPS' from eBay, surprisingly.

It's very easy to calibrate. WOT is set at ~4.5v, closed is ~.5v. Red probe on the multimeter goes to the middle wire, black to chassis ground. Turn car to ACC, then rotate till your readings are good and tighten the screws.

I took off the air filter element and looked in the TB and noticed the valve was opened (turned sideways). The car was turned off. There is no high idle or rpm prob right now after the code was reset. What's the deal? Tks

You do not have 2. You have 1. The thing that look like a TB is the VSA unit.
The TB is the closest to the engine where the throttle cables are.

The one that's open is the VSA unit. It's supposed to be open under normal conditions. Look at the one closest to the intake manifold.

The best price I found for a new throttle body is at delray acura (less than 300bucks) I went to my dealer (Lindsay Acura Cbus) and asked if they would price match and they did no prob. I decided not to order it and went home, changed the airfilter, sprayed some carb cleaner into the TB, filled up with some Shell 93 and have'nt had a prob for a week now. I will keep my fingers crossed!

Hello - I just purchased a 99 TL with 150,000 on it. The guy I bought it from said it needed a new "idle sensor". I figured he was talking about the TPS and had the codes checked out and they also were related to TPS. When driving the car home, it shifts at higher RPMs than it should... It shifts each gear at about 3500 instead of around 2500.

So I bought the "OMNI" TPS replacement from IAP Direct and installed it yesterday... Thanks to all the forums on the web, it only took 15 minutes to make the switch. Before I installed the new sensor, I did notice the old one wasn't even plugged in. So I plugged it back in, reset the codes, and started the car. The codes popped back up after 5 seconds. So I unplugged the old one and replaced it with the new...

I plugged the new one in, reset the codes again, and started the car back up. I still get the maintenance req, TCS, and transmission light on. I decided to take the car for a drive with the new sensor plugged in, and after I started the car, the shift lock was on and I couldn't shift out of Park. I went ahead and popped the shift override button next to the shifter and shifted out of park. I took the car around my block and it wouldn't even shift out of first gear! I switched to manual shift mode to get back home...

I unplugged the new sensor and the car is back to "normal" again... Codes still appear, car shifts too high, but the shift lock is not on when I start the car, I can easily shift out of park...

I am at a loss at what could be wrong at this point - i checked all related fuses and nothing is blown -- Forgive me - I am new to Hondas / Acuras but I can't understand how the car runs ok (other than shifting higher than normal) with the TPS unplugged but it will not even shift out of first when it is plugged in...

Any ideas and all help is greatly appreciated!!
