Hello everybody im Steve, Im a newbie, with a 2001 CL type S with about 5,000 miles.
I was at the track this week and saw 2002 Maxima GLE , it was nice, sans that huge emblem in the front, and its HID's make a difference.... I thought it was pretty good.

I decided to talk to the guy, he was cool, we looked at the car and inside the hood, and it was nicer than the previous model's engine, all covered up nicer, it had 255 hp , and since i had 260 and had a CAI i decided to challenge him to a race, so we got inline and met at the tree, and the lights started down the tree, I took off very good, .533 R/T and burned little rubber, with VSA off, we were side by side for about the 60' then he started pulling on me, i was shocked!!!!! im trying to shift my SS right before redline each gear and his tail lights were in plain view, we passed the end and he was ahead, i was mad, as I drove up to the booth to get my time slip he flashed his hazards at me, I thought I screwed up somewhere, but my 1/4 was 14.993 my BEST TIME YET!! . But man that Maxima was quick.. we met up afterwards and he got a 14.73!!!!!!!! man! at 92 or 93 or something, I was at 95mph, I had a faster speed than him. He had a K&N filter on his car that was about it, He let me drive his Max down the strip and He drove mine, he did a 15.034 with my car, and I FLOORED HIS CAR HARD, but i didnt tree shift, it felt very responsive, but the RPM's climed a bit slower than mine, I did a 14.929 with out tree shifting (he doesnt have SS like us now ) He later messed up his car tho, it limpped out , it was cool how it goes into safe mode, but i wont do that to mine My girlfriend still likes the CL better, tho, but the maxima she thought was pimp also. He had a full tank of gas and I had 1/4, we're going again next week, and im going to run him again... HOW CAN I MAKE MY 1/4 BETTER!! I CANT HAVE A MAXIMA BEAT ME! PLEASE HELP

 

BTW the the car was a GLE, is that slower of faster than the SE model, I dont know about those max's hehe,

I went to Maxima.org, and saw his post, i think that was him, i remember a maxima.org decal on his car. he's 02maximaSE or something like that.

I went snooping to see if he had some hidden performance but he was stock at the track basically, and he didnt mention beating my CL.... I can beat 01's easliy even the 5-spds, man the 02's are quick, I hope our 6-speed models will BEAT the 6spd Max.

 

Maybe try it without SS, just floor it. Was VSA off ?

Without SS I pull 15.0-15.1, I can do better with control of the shifts.

 

Well, GLE only come in a Auto 4spd, so is GXE. From 2002, the only Manual will be SE 6spd, and they are not even out yet, so if you race a 2002 MAX, they gotto be Auto. Wow, they do make the 3.5 MAX alot fast than before. Yes, when i drove the car, the first thing i notice was, they really did use the wrong tranny for the 3.5, they should have use the 5spd.

But then since it's a 4spd, and the motor has MORE torque than TL/CL, 4spd will benifit with each gear pull longer. So if you race one, when you shift from 1st to 2nd, they still in 1st pulling, by the time you shift from 2nd to 3rd, they still in 2nd at the mid-high range. A pulley would help the rpm come a little faster.

BTW, I seriously do think your time should be better. Yes, I am NOT suprise that a Max can pull on you, but a TypeS with CAI should run mid 14s. Cuz I have a CLP, not even TypeS, with CAI, Pulleys, and Denso plugs, I ran a fastest 14.84 in a cold night, and slowest time was 15.12 in a HOT HOT humid Houston night.

Imagine a 6spd 3.5 coming out in January, they should be really quick. Also the TypeS 6spd, it will be a battle. But then, still, Honda still lack of torque. BTW, watch out for the Altima 3.5 as well, I have seen one at Baytown, 5spd, STOCK, ran a 14.58.

Your numbers are great already..high 14's with just an intake
His number is even better for an auto Max

Get exhaust or good tires..you might be able to make the race closer..and dont forget to take the back seat out

 

Ice down your manifold prior to racing with a full bag of ice. When you get in line to run your car should be just heating up to normal operating temperature.

Make sure your filter is clean. Since you don't have headers you might want to try letting the car shift for you since the power drops off much more quickly in the higher rpms without headers than with them.

Maybe go in for a tranny fluid change also.

All in all, though, you ran some respectable times with what you have and there is no shame in giving a lighter car with 0.3 more liters and a ton more torque a good run for its money.

 

What's up with his car going into safe mode? Doesn't sound good.

Yeah, GLEs and GXEs are 4-speed auto, SEs are offered with either a 6-speed manual or 4-speed auto.

 

Thanks everybody, I'll try 1-2-D3 next time I run. Yes they do have more torque and have a weight advantage over us. But Its all in fun, I feel I can do better, the maxima's now are very nice cars for the money and quick I met up with him for "Runday Sunday at the track (muscle car challenges) , and he has taken his back seats out and put stock 15' inch 97 wheels on the front tires equipped with Nitto NT-555R Extreme Drag Radials! He also had some jerry-rigged CAI system ready for installation, it looked like a vacuum! it was called OS-CAI or something, and BOSCH +4 plugs, i was surprised the maxima came with +2 prong sparks factory.. But the car was decked out ready for Tuesday, we will compete together in the bracket segment tues. hmmm he did 14.73 STOCK with K&N drop in and FULL TANK, imagine with low tank, and those tires and OSCAI. It was nice and cool about 64 degs out tonight at the track. He is starting a car club with his friends, not sure what the name is yet, its still being debated. current members are a 1997 M3, 2000 TL, 2k2 Maxima, 95 Integra RS Turbo, and I may join for weekend kicks, plus the Maxima guy deals with a PERFORMANCE SHOP, and club members get 25% off, so Im definately going to be in the gang.
