Is there something wrong here?

Hey guys, need to know your opinion. I have an 03 Auto-Cls with 3,000 miles. I do not drive highway often at all. On the tanks with no highway and only city driving, I am averaging 16.4mpg. Is this too low, or is it about right. I floor it a decent amount of time, and accelerate decently. Should I be expecting a better number? I know its advertised at 19/29.

And you have low mileage, as do I. It'll get better over time.

calculate your mpg by filling your tank (let the pump click off automatically - don't try to "top off" the tank) - reset your odometer to zeros and drive. when you want to check - return to same gas station, use the same pump and fill-up as before. note the miles driven and divide by number of gallons pumped (I round to closest 10th) and that equals your MPG. My '98 23.CL w/5 sp gets 32-35 MPG - now down to 30-33 MPG with snows and cold weather.

I average right at 20 MPG driving around LA... I'd say 70% is highway at 70 MPH, rest is stop and go traffic. I've kept every gas receipt and mark them w/ the odometer and trip meter readings. I do get on the gas pretty hard relatively often for passing and from a stop (Who can resist going Vtech every now and then? )

If anyone would be interested in collecting more data, I'm curious if different brands of gasoline would yield better results (I have only used Chevron Premium so far).

Seems to me too that we should get better mileage. I'm in the 17-18MPG range and alot of stop and go. It seems I do a little better when I use the auto shift and keep it in 2nd in traffic.
Plus I can skoot in and out a bit quicker :-)

I have gotten 28+ but only on extended freeway in 5th at 75mph. 22+ average is 30% better for me. I have 27K on my '01

You dont have to do all that. Just fill up your tank and next time you get gas take the miles that you drove and and divide them by the amount of gas that you used. Pretty easy

i usually get real shit mileage...arround 200 miles per tank if im just going through the city. If i hit the freeway for only 20 or 30 miles though, the mpg jumps WAY up...the cls loves the open air

I do alot of in city driving and only average 19-20 so 16 doesn't sound right, but it should get better as you break it further in.

so my getting 235 miles on one tank (last time i checked i filled up right after the gas light came on, ~13.75 gallons) is more or less 17.xx mpg and i drive in D4 all the time and have 26700 miles total. is this about right? im not really doing "city" driving, more like a long road that has alot of traffic at times and alot of lights, but there are a few stretches of land good enough for 80-100 mph driving. i dont know what to call it considering its not really a city street or a highway.

Don't worry...I will have had my car 3 years next May. I can go a lot further in the week now without refilling. I remember thinking the car was a gas hog when I first purchased it but its fine now. I get about 31 highway.

I do mostly highway at 75-80 and some around town. I consistently get 25-27. The worst I ever got was in the bitter cold when it was new (22-23).

got 41,000 on it now.

I was getting about 16.5 - 17.5 MPG on a few all city tanks and I got concerned too.

I also noticed that I was really enjoying revving the car into the 4K - 5K RPM range (2nd plenum -> low VTEC) even with basic city driving, so I did an experiment:

I did a couple tanks where I did all my shifts at 2 - 3K RPM. My mileage came up to about 20 MPG for an all city tank.

My conclusion - stepping down on the accelerator pedal expends more fuel!

I'm sure you too will be astounded by this conclusion.

Just returned from Vegas after Thanksgiving. Averaged 80 in sixth for 342 miles back to San Diego. Filled up and took only 11.4 gallons! That's exactly 30 mpg. Very hard to drive for gas mileage, did it once, next time will drive for fun!
