When it gets really cold, you should keep the gas tank at least half full at all times. What happens is the more empty the tank is, the more the inside walls of the tank are exposed to air (exposed surface area increases as fuel decreases). At really cold temperatures it is very easy to get condensation on the metal walls of the gas tank. This water mixes with the gas and since gasoline has a lower specific gravity than water, the water sinks to the bottom of the tank, which is where the fuel pick-up is. Once the water gets into the fuel lines it will freeze since the lines aren't insulated between the tank and the engine. In real extreme temperatures, the gas line can freeze while the engine is running and the vehicle is in motion and the engine will just die. You do not want to get stranded with a frozen fuel line because the only real solution is to tow the car someplace warm and let the lines thaw out (or crawl underneath and hold a hairdryer next to the fuel lines for about 45 minutes).
Dry gas is a must because it is attracted to water and although the water will still freeze, it will crystalize (as opposed to freezing solid) which can still pass through the fuel line.
Moral of the story: keep your tank full and use dry gas--one small container of dry gas for every 10 gallons of gas. Usually one per fill-up is ideal, especially if you're good about filling up at a half tank.

After living and growing up in the nothern regions of Ill. I had enough,, moved to northern Texas where we have have nice weather for nine months and to dam hot for three. We still venture up to the north to see/feel snow and cold for a couple of weeks and then come running home to the south. IF you live in the harder northern climates don't ever move to the south; You'll find 20 years will fly by and not realize you were ever from snow county. I'm still the only one on my block with a saucer sled and snow shovel,, guess I just have to keep somethings from my kid days. Good luck to all with their winter adventures, now, I have to decide what short sleeve shirt to wear.,,,

everyday is a high of 9, and a low of -11.... without wind chill. w/ it, its gotta be easily -30, bc at some times its so windy u actually see small girls get knocked down all the time, like when coming around a corner of a building. its like one big blizzard 24/7. its so cold it doesnt even snow, its just ice trickling from the sky.

The weather in the east looks miserable. We rarely get down to freezing here and even that is too cold, but it's usually just a day or so. We have had an especially warm winter here, highs still in the 60's today.
