TCS and Check engine light on

I have had my check engine light come on at high RPM's when passing, but it has always gone off when I shut it down. Caused by a mis-fire I was told.

Saturday I drove my car for the first time in over a month. I went to merge and got on it hard. The car bucked once, then it took off, but now the traction light is on and so it the check engine light is on. The wont go off if the car is turned off. So I made an appointment.

Any suggestions on what it might be?

If there is a problem with the TCS/VSA, the traction control system can revert to "fail safe mode." When this happens, the TSC light will remain on. Faulty wheel sensors, throttle body issues, and TONS of other little issues can kick the light on. The dealer -- or someone with a diagnostic tool -- needs to read the DTCs (diagnostic trouble codes) to find out what is actually causing the light(s) to stay on.

If the TCS/VSA detects a problem (it has its own subsystem with CPU) with the car's main computer, it kills the TCS and the TCS light stays on.

A friend with an OBD II scan tool would be handy right about now. A scan tool can be had for around $130.

YMMV

Yeah, its an 03 with the 5AT. But it seems to be running fine, but now all that is on is the check engine.

It seems like a lot of people have trouble with their cars mis-firing. Why is this?

Most of the '03 misfires I was aware of are for the 6-Speeds. Get the code read and if it is misfire related, have them change the plugs.

Get someone to look at the DTC codes and see what’s causing the ECU ->TCS to "act-up." The main ECU "talks" to the traction control through a communication channel. You really want to find out what's causing the problem.

If you hate dealers and want to "explore" various problems, here's an OBDII scan tool for $119.99 (I paid $130 -- shipping included):

If the car is under warranty – it should be – the diagnostic should be free…
