Sun roof rattle even after TSB
It looks like my sun roof started to rattle again when sun shade is open ( while sun roof window is closed). about 2 years ago, dealership performed TSB on my sun roof, after which it was fixed... now its back. Did this happen to anyone else ?

What exactly does the TSB do to resolve the rattle. I have the same problem on my new 2003 CL-S. When the sunroof is closed and the sunshade open, I hear a distinct rattle or creak coming from the front of the sunroof. I'm reluctant to have my dealer try to fix the problem for fear that they might make it worse. I recently had the car in the dealership to have the front headlights replaced since they were fogging up with condensation. After four trips, and a scratched bumper, they finally got it fixed.

Is there a listing in this forum of the actual TSB? It sure would be helpful when I take my car into the dealership. I really don't feel confident that they know what they are doing.

Sweet as Gold
Buy a tube of shinitsu grease and apply it to the sunroof glass seal after cleaning it . It should work for a long period of time...and the tube will last hundreds of applications!!!!

I have an 03 CL-S with 1700 miles on it and my sun roof rattles alot. the acura dealership can reproduce the rattle but they say they cant see to find it. They think they will need to take the whole headliner down. So i would like a better way to fix my problem and i saw you guys where talking about this TSB thing, WHAT IS THAT. ALso the rattle is comming from the front area of the sunroof.

Where is my super sauce?
The Squeak From the Moonroof Seal TSB is number 00-032. I have a copy of it in .pdf form that I downloaded from this site a long time ago. Do a search, I'm sure it's still somewhere out there.
The fix is very easy and I cannot imagine a dealer having an issue with this easy problem. It involves putting some Honda Squeak Reduction Tape around the seal of the moonroof.
I had this fixed on my car at its 7500 mile service. The dealer didn't even bat an eye when I mentioned my moonroof rattles. He just said, "no problem, we'll fix it." -- and he did.
I think waving the TSB in the service manager's face is really just asking for a confrontation. Although I think this may be acceptable if there is a problem in getting something fixed, you really shouldn't have to resort to this when you first present your problem. These common TSB issues are ones that the service manager already knows about -- no use in pissing him off unnecessarily.

Actually if you just open the sunroof and use some Meguires tire gell lightly around the edge where the rubber seals it solves it. The tire gell helps keep the rubber seal soft and provides just enough lubrication to keep the noise down. Takes all of a couple minutes and if you do it once a month or so, no problems.
It is a half assed design, even my Ford F150 that's 2 years old don't make sunroof noises like the CL, but it is easily controlled.

Are we talking about 2 different noises here? My sunroof makes a rattle when the headliner cover is back, but not when its closed. Most definitely not a "squeek" noise that could be fixed with some grease. I read somewhere else on the site about removing the headliner to fix the rattle... anyone been able to search that thread out?

My dealer told me they would have to take the headliner down to find the rattle, and it would take them 2 days to do. i havnt done it yet, im trying to tolerate the stupid noise till it get really bad. my car is only a month old and i really dont want the head liner taken off so soon. and im sure it will make rattles when they put it back on.

I just had the car serviced (3400 miles) and had them look at the sunroof rattle. The service manager knew right away (common problem). They put the tape around the car edge of the sun roof. Now the rubber seal sits against the tape instead of the sheet metal.
The only thing I don't like is on one section, the tech went too high so I can see the tape with the sun roof closed (from the outside ofcourse).

Stejus, did they use a foam-backed tape? I can't see how regular thin tape would stop the rattle. I'm taking it in to a honda dealer (they don't sell acuras where I live) so I'd like to know as much as possible about the fix.
Thanks

The tape is clear and is made of teflon .The purpose is to prevent the seal from rubbing on the paint itself of the roof panel .Apparently this rubbing of rubber on paint causes a sound that closely matches a creak or rattle .The tape has to be very thin .Please try to keep in mind that when you clean the car a few minutes spent wiping down the sunroof seal and the roof panel opening goes a long way to silencing the dreaded sunroof noise .
There are several other sources of noises that we have found over the years however these are a difficult to track down and do require considerable disasssembly to solve .

I'm surprised this is an issue with Acura's. How do other car makers do it without the noise? I'm sure the other makers have rubber seals seated against the paint.

The creaking sunroof seal has been an issue with the CL/TL since dau one .For whatever mysterious reason Acura/Honda chose never to address it .The only thing we were told was in the beginning to use a special grease and then later the teflon tape .I have not a guess as to why the thing makes noise and why some cars have issues with and others do not .We tried replacing some entire sunroof panels to see what would happen but nothing came of it as some cars started creaking again where others stayed silent for some time .It was and continues to be a great source of aggravation .

Yeah the sunroof rattle is gettign to me again. im gonna take it around 3800 miles for an oil change and have them look at my roof and the anoying rattle comming from my driverside window, where the window goes in the frame. Anyway one of the reasons im pissed at my sunroof is that my dad owned a 97 RL and his roof had no rattles, then he got a 2000 TL and that roof never rattled. So i get a 03 CL and my dam roof rattles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
