and the summer begins...2.2cl vs 1.8t gti

as some of you know, my work area is pretty much straight roads for a good 10 or so miles. and it has a very high street racing area.
coming out of work today, had the sunroof and all the windows open, listening to music and i see the gti next to me and a few cars infront of us. Didn't think he was going to do anything so all the cars in my lane turned and i just trucked along.

then he comes over in my lane and hes coming a little fast and im driving a few mph over the speed limit, then we get to the traffic light and it turns yellow. so i gun it because i was going about 60 in the 50 and didnt feel like slamming on my brakes and get rear ended.

so i look down and i see im going 80 and hes following me thru the light and i slow down so he can catch up and as soon as he goes for a fly-by i punch it and we go head to head for about 1/2 a mile with no traffic but there is a light coming up.

we get to the light and one lane was open with no cars so we both get in that lane and wait for the light to turn green, as soon as it turns green he punches it and i waited for him to go so i don't be a jackass and leave at the same time as him.
so he gets the headstart and pulls 2 cars, i floor it and quickly catch up and pull in the lane next to him (4 lane road with a median gap to split the sides up) and i catch up to him side by side and i start pulling away from him............but my turn came up im pretty sure i could have pulled atleast a car on him if we had more road. either way it was a nice race, i got smile out of it, traffic was minimum, weather was great and my lip didnt fall off .

im assuming it was, since the badge said 1.8t.
i honestly think that one of the previous owners either rebuilt the engine with nice internals or replaced the engine from a car that had built internals, i've ran my brother's camry (190 hp) and i pulled a car on him, or if you look at my older races i've won races i probably shouldn't be winning.

GTI's are pretty quick after a 80mph's, so i dont really know if you guy went above the 80mph's, and i am thinking his car was stock and auto. This is coming from the gti ex owner.

thats because the earlier GTIs were 1.8l turbo 150 hp/155 ft.lbs. Once they bumped it up 180 hp, it gained 20 more ft.lbs they got quicker. With that said, the CL would get walked by either due to weight. GTI wasn't racing or sucked at driving

it wasnt the current gen, but the one before it. there were 2 fairly big guys in there. did they come in auto? i've raced a celica gt-s and i think they're about same spec, except i lost to the celica about midway in 3rd around 90mph, but i also beat him in a 60 roll to 115ish.

ill try to get a video of my next race, im gonna be running a vr6 jetta soon.

yes, they came in auto on the 1.8T trim. the vr6 had a 6sp manual. i still think he should have walked you. i call driver error on his part or auto tranny.

celica gt-s is 180 hp, but its feather light, a tad under 2500lbs. the killer of that car is the tranny. auto just kills it, the 6spd has way too long gears, making it drop out of Lift(Toyota's VTEC). properly driven, they're beasts, very very fast. again, it was either auto or driver error.

you'll get smoked by the vr6...a ton of low end torque and very smooth torque curve. i barely inched a vr6 corrado in my prelude. half a car.

havent had a chance to race the vr6 yet, but i did mess with him a little. it has a very nice tq range, not so much top end though.
i also killed a 08 hyundai elantra and a ford probe when they were racing each other after work and i was behind them at the light.....and beat them both by around 2 cars
race an older miata with some fat guy that thought he was the shiz wearing a gold watch and slicked back hair. i let him floor it first then i did after him, didnt take long to catch up and pass him.
i ran into him last week but again today. unfortunately i was too tired after work to race him from a roll.
i think im gonna just keep updating this thread all summer instead of making new ones
i had a newer mustang that was beastly looking and sounding trying to race.....but i chickened out. was messing around with an prelude, i couldnt tell if it was an h23 or f22b2. but it was definitly not an h22, it was pretty slow.

my friend with an h22 accord raced the same year accord with the f22 motor in it and the f22 had a couple more mods than the H22 also. Once vtec engaged it was a wrap, he was gone. 1st gear stayed even till vtec, once vtec kicked in he pulled a car. 2nd gear same story, ended in 3rd. H22 is a beautiful thing.
