suggestion..which car as a beater for less than $2k
ok, guys, need suggestion, I might get a job in NJ, I just came back today from the office to see how the ride is, so for me to get there I have to go over the George Washington bridge which the ramps leading there are filled with HUGE potholes and just the NJ streets are bad, so I was considering on purchasing a beater as an everyday driver and not put on all those miles, chips and tear on my CL-S and on the rims(18's) soooooo I am starting to possibly look for a beater for under $2k!!
I am looking for a 4 cylinder, "decent" miles (try to stay under 100k) and condition, reliable car that can handle bumper to bumper traffic and not stall on me over the bridge!! so I DONT want something that I have to dump a shit load of $$ into fixing up...Any Suggestion guys...Thanks
yes it is tough to find something that low $$ with what I want but lets see what we can do...
Possible contenders: old/used
Imports; (not that risky)
87-93 Honda Civic <reliable ?
??-?? Toyota Corolla <reliable ?
.........Nissan Sentra <reliable ?
etc...
American; (risky...)
90-up Chevy Cavalier < reliable - not to sure?
90-up Pontiac Grand Am <reliable - not to sure?
......... Dodge Shadow <reliable -not to sure?

Stay away from Pontiac/GM. Cars of those years have tons of little problems. Any Honda, Toyota, Nissan, or Mistubishi will make you happy. Chances of find one under $2K with under 100K miles is slim though. Do a seach on Ebay that will give you an idea of what's out there.

Any used Toyota/Nissan/Honda/Mazda will be perfect for you. As a matter of fact, my mom has a Mazda Protege and swears by the thing, they seem to have a bit more pep than the comparable models of other Japanese manufacturers....and hers has like 150K miles on it.

If I were you I would look for a protoge. I have a whole bunch of friends who have these and they are great. I prefer a stick in the protoge as it is faster, but it is just fine with an auto as well. You also might be able to pick up a 91-95 pro with under 100k for around 2k

Even maybe an older 626...those old Mazdas rule...the guy taht bought my parents 86 626 from them came by the other day, no single repair over $300 and total cost of less than $3000 in repairs since buying it in '90 from them, and it now has 385k on it (!!!) or so he says.

My last car was a '94 Saturn SL2. I put 171,000 miles on it. I changed oil every 3000 miles and spark plugs and serp. belt every 75K miles. The only "major" problem was my alternator that I had to change out 3 times. But my stereo system was the cause.
All in all it was very reliable and very cheap to maintain. You will also find that they are the cheapest cars to insure.

i did the same commute to paramus nj. you are right the roads/traffic is chaotic. i left my good car home and ran a plymouth colt by mitsubishi. newer versions such as the mitsu. mirage are its successor. they tend to be less than the big jap. three brands and are similarly reliable. eagle summit is the same car. good luck. try the want ad press which covers the metro area. they are pretty reliable up to about 150k. miles.

I had a 90 Cavalier as a second car when I had my Cobra. I bought it with 90K miles for $1800.... I drove it for a year (41K miles) with no problems. I also sold it for $1500...besides my Cobra....It was my best investment in an automobile!

Classy - I'd stick with your original list and look at older Honda and Toyota. I like the idea also of a 2nd gen Integra too. I had a 1991 Integra LS before the CL and never had major problems, just typical maintanence issues.
