Strange problems

Daughters 2001 acura c l 3.2 vtech is having problems when the weather gets cold. Start right up but you have to keep the r p m's above 1000. If you let them drop below that the motor tries to die and kicks on the tcs light. Then you have hail restarting the motor. If you keep the rpms up till it warms up you are fine. If you let rps drop at a stop before its has warmed up completly the car tries to die and the tcs light comes back on and you have to turn the car off to clear light to run right. Toke it to the dealer and they said it could be multiple items and might run 1500 to 2000 bucks. Thinking bs. Suspect maybe coil to one cylinder. Any ideas from the gurus or that matter anyone with any ideas?

I would look into the IACV (Idle Air Control Valve), a buddy of mine had similiar issue with his car in the past and it turned out that it had gone bad. Hopefully this is of some help.

Before we throw parts at the car, take it to autozone/advance etc and get the codes read for free. Then we can help you

Thanks andy all help is appreciated. As far as the codes read i will have to wait for a colder morning in a few days. Can i clear code by pulling the The clock fuse? Want to make sure this issue is the only one stored. My plan is not to shotgun with new parts. Way to expensive for me! I will seach site to see if item mentioned by andy is able to be tested. Thanks

Was it the TCS light or check engine light?
sounds like an idle issue which could be the IACV or maybe the throttle position sensor.

IACV can be removed and cleaned and the tps can be tested with a volt meter. I'll see if I can find the thread on the TL forum.

The check engine light was already on. When it stumbles or tries to die the tcs light comes on which can be cleared by turning off the car and restarting (if it will) When restarting the car sounds terrible. Dont know how to describe other than sounds like timing is way off and and it fights to restart. It does not sound like a normal car having trouble starting. After it starts it sounds normal and smooth as long as I keep the rpms above 1000. If it drops below that its going to die if it has not warmed up for 5 to 10 minutes.
I am going to clear the faults and take to autozone and check with reader for codes. Right now the weather for a few days is going to be to warm to reset and check.

Beyondhelpin, I think I identified the issue on the TL I was working on, perhaps the issue I am having is the same, as the symptoms are definitely the same. I posted pages from the Factory Service Manual that helped me in the diagnosis.

If you can drive your car, bring it up to Auto Zone or Advance Auto and get the codes read for free.
