Stolen Acura headlights (again)
An article in my local newspaper warns residents to take the stolen headlight problem seriously.
Five different Acuras were hit last week, most of them in commuter parking lots or parked at shopping malls.
My Mother drives a 2000 TL, and she's not happy. A friend of hers has an identicle car and the pricks got her car two weeks ago. Not only did they rip out the headlights, but also destroyed both fenders and the bumper. Seems that thieves are using a crowbar to pry the lights out.
I know this has already been discussed, but it really seems like a major problem when it hits home like this.....

That is messed up man. This is getting out of hand...can't even buy nice things anymore without some low-life beating you for it. Hey Sniper! Man, why don't you fix a shaped-charge behind the lights rigged to go off if tampered with.

I think Acura may have to re-think their HID set up. Did you guys ever notice that the ballast boxes are bolted directly to the bottom of the headlight housings?
That makes stealing the entire HID system as easy as snatching the headlight housings and running......

Suggestion: install aftermarket alarm system with shock sensor! Plus you can get it with remote starter.

It's getting to the point that you can not leave your car anywhere (that it is not protected).

the alarm doesn't do much. its just a fucking annoying noise. do you really think the alarm is gonna keep them from taking a exterior feature on your car, please! you could jack a car with one for Christ sake.

Yes, they steal the entire unit. But since it is bolted in place, I'm pretty sure that they have to break it to pry it out. Maybe the actual lens isn't broken, but I'd bet that the plastic on the inside is broken. Or at least where it is bolted to the body.
If you think about it, there's not a big market for CL or TL headlight lenses because those are model-specific parts. But the parts inside can easily be retrofitted to any car.

Acura (and all other carmakers that have HIDs standard on models) needs to take the step backward and make HIDs dealer-installed options. Yes, it will cost them more in DOT certification and slightly more in dealership logistics, but that's how you prevent situations like this.
They need to do this for the simple reason that high insurance rates hurt new car sales.

ClPower, your attitude on criminal activity leaves a lot to be desired. If we were all hoodlems and thugs like your buddies, what kind of world would this would be? If you were a victim you wouldn't be so cavalier. Also, if you hang with these thugs, it wouldn't surprise me to see your name on a police report down the road.

Who your friends are says a lot about you.
Those CL lamps that your friend is selling most likely belong to someone who went to work and bought them. Then some punk f*cks up their property, and you defend that?
Sad dude.

I find it unconscionable that anyone would protect someone they know to be involved in this. Perhaps you would like to talk to the owners of the cars that have been hit. I do on a daily basis- it is not fun. I have 2 of these cars and fully understand their feelings of violation and anger. Instead of "protectin' the boyz", we should be collectively trying to figure out a way to stop and, even better, catch these punks. Its going to effect us sooner or later- at $3500 a pop, how long till the insurance companies raise the rates on the comp for these cars? We tolerate way too much of this crap because we choose to!

Well, prevention is simple enough IMO. Buy a personal alarm, mind your parking, and pray. I have insurance, I have been vandalized and had claims in for my car. As mad as I was it was still why I pay for my insurance. If my rate goes up it's for more reasons than some stolen headlights.
As far as "protecting the boyz" that's a deeper issue. I don't condone the involvement of theft with anyone but at the same time I don't rat out my friends, just don't pull me in if I don't want to be involved (shame on YOU clpower for being involved). I think it goes way beyond Acuras and cars into morals and honestly, what were talking about. If your best friend is cheating on his wife do you go tell? If your best friend is cheating on his taxes do you call the IRS? If your best friend is stealing cars on the side do you call the police? Where do you draw the line? Hmmm, this is definitely the "deep end of the poool" conversation.

Well said Eclipse- throw me a life preserver It's just hard when some poor young lady sits in your office and sobs over the damage to her car.

I'm sorry that this is the age of "situational ethics". If your boyz steal stuff then they are THIEVES! If you choose to be their boyz then that's you. If you choose to further their ends by actually buying STOLEN goods then you may as well be considered a THIEF as well!
Look, taking stuff that doesn't belong to you is WRONG. It's wrong five years ago, yesterday, today and in the future. Don't rationalize your underdeveloped moral compass with "I don't rat on my boyz". That played out in high school. If you like to hang around thieves then it's likely you're a thief also, and I hope you go to jail along with them. Don't bring up all kinds of excuses and hypothetical situations....they stole the lights and they are wrong. You don't have to turn them in (you should though) but you certainly don't have to buy what someone working stiff purchased with his/her hard-earned money had stolen from them.
If you're going to be wrong, just be wrong and don't give us all that other crap.

I misread your later posts when you stated that you won't buy it from them. Good, and I'll recant my statements about you purchasing stuff from him/her.
