sticky throttle?

Hey all I have a question, usually when I start my car after a few hours parked the throttle is a little sticky. I mean I have to push a bit hard on it to make the car move but when I do that the car suddenly takes off! After it warms up, the throttle is fine with good response. Just when I start it in the morning and when I press the accelerator it happens. I have an 02 CLS.. Any inputs why this is happening?

Buildup on the throttle plate causing it to stick...

Nothing a good cleaning with a q-tip soaked in WD40 can't fix, so if you have 1/2 an hour or so and know how to disassemble things, it's worth it than having to book an appt. at your local dealer.

Roleez hit it dead on. It's pretty easy to clean.

I had the same problem as you.

My solution was to untighten the throtle cable at its engine end side. There is a rubber nipple covering the steel brained cable within the rubber cable housing. I sprayed silicon lubricant to lubricate the steel braded cable within the rubber cable housing. I am sure this solved the problem. However, I've only driven 5 miles and have not had enough milage to really make sure this solved the issue.

I've had this issue with other cars, and this procedure normally cures the issue.

Do not use WD40, as this will eventually dry out and your will end up with the same issue later.

Please let me know if you need any assistance getting this done.

I don't think its the sticky throttle... mine does it to when the engine is cold and my throttle-plate is shiny and clean - I believe its part of the warm-up cycle.

I had that problem, I lubed the little hinges where the pedal mounts and the problems solved. A can of penetrating fluid goes along way on these cars.

Not in this case ... it's a sticky throttle. Mine sticks about every 10,000 miles or so. The dealer sprays throttle body cleaner (or whatever) into the intake and revs the throttle a bit. Problem solved for a few months.

Damn it's irritating ....

sticky throttle and stalling

My throttle is sticky as hell and the car is stalling at idle. This is killing me. Would cleaning the throttle plate solve both problems? What causes this? Anyone got a "Cleaning your throttle plate for Dummies" write-up?

03 6spd with 70k miles.

Thanks.

Someone/anyone please help? How exactly does your TB get "damaged" if not in an accident. You sucking in rocks through your AI? Just curious. Anything would be appreciated, thanks.

ctechcls, allmotor is correct, part of startup "warmup " proceedure. the engine is ingesting cool/moist air during the first few minutes. the air entering the TB is warmed thru the engine coolant temperature during this process. also the fuel is cool. this cool air/fuel "charge" is quite "fuel rich" and combustion is slowed and not particularly powerfull. once the TB is up to operational temp, much more thourough combustion takes place thus more power and smoother running begins. i would surmise that under these same conditions the warming effect of the engine upon the throttle linkage "frees up" the cable linkage to being more responsive. (note vehicles in thecolder/moister climates experiance more of these symptoms than say in phoenix)

as to , how to clean corrosion from the TB. loosen/remove the clamp and the rubber hose leading to the TB. now the round butterfly valve plate is visible . clean the TB bore and both sides of the plate w/ carb cleaner, reconnect then lube the throttle linkage and pedel linkages as noted above.
