So whats the deal with shifting into third with the SS...

This wasn't a problem when I first got my car but it is now. When I am in SS it takes 2 to 3 times to shift into 3rd with the SS. There have been talks on here before about this. I wish it would not do that, it makes me not want to use it.

Mine's always done it. If I try to back off the throttle suddenly and shift 2->3 at the same time, it stays in 2nd. Its a real pain when I want to WOT it to 50mph in 2nd gear and then stop accelerating and shift into 3rd. It usually leaves me screaming down the road at 5000+ rpm for a few very long seconds.

Calvin,
That's the same exact problem I was having with mine before the transmision decided to 'give it up' and not shift anymore. My car is still at the dealership, and i'm having some negative feelings about service at Sterling McCall Acura after some of the stuff that was going on when I brought it in Friday.

Seems like the Service GM that was the best guy in the world to deal with is no longer there, I don't know much about the new GM but we will see how everything turns out.

If I was busting out 2nd gear and then wanted to coast into a higher gear, I would toggle it forward like three times to get up to fourth or fifth since third wouldn't coast as much. Maybe try flicking it up a couple times.

Mine prolly does it too... but I dont sportshift when going UP... mainly because its just a waste of time.

May as well just flick it back to D5 when upshiftin.

But... my CLS doesnt have the problems my TL had. My TL would get stuck in 2nd gear until I turned the car off!!! Sportshift/D5 nothing could get it outta 2nd gear till I stopped... and rebooted

I run into this sort of thing all the time and it's the main reason why I don't use SS very often. There seems to be periods of time when the transmission is... like... "blacked-out" for lack of a better term. If you click the lever during that time, it will simply NOT respond until you click it again when it starts listening again. All in all, this transmission is VERY easy to confuse when in SS.

I work on PC's all day long and they're flakey, tempermental, little SOBs! Its mostly the software that causes the problems. I don't think I like the trend of cars becoming more and more computer controlled. Yet another reason for a stick. It'll never decide one day that it knows more about driving that you do.

I guess I feel better that I wasn't the only one experiencing this. I thought it was simply because I wasn't used to the SS yet. I have to try and shift it a couple times before it goes into 3rd.

But it also scares me that this was happening before the tranny went out. Makes me not want to use SS as much anymore..

My friend has a Prelude with the SS and has had it for about 3 years. He says he never has this problem. It has to be a mechanical problem. The software would not just stop working.

Amen. Computers are NOT a godsend, they're an annoyance veiled with the temptation of easy-of-use, but they are just the opposite - they make life more frustrating.

I hate to say it guys but this is one case where a domestic car maker got it right. My old car (98 Dodge Intrepid ES) had the auto-stick and it was worlds better than the SS in the Acura. Not only did it actually allow you to shift 1-2 and 2-1 but it also never hesitated or didn't shift. If you shifted it, it went to the next gear every time. I don't find myself using the SS all that much because it pretty much sucks compared to the autostick that I got used to with my old car.
