so my nav screen died today

man am i thankful i got an extended warranty. i think the bulb on the lcd screen of my nav just burned out, but my dealer says they have to replace the whole screen. anyone else had this happen to them? my TL turns 5 this fall, 41,0000 miles is how long it took for my nav screen to burn out.

Do u leave it on every single time ur driving it?

Cos i have a habit of turning it off when i'm not using it, which is nearly 90% of the time. Just curious cos i'd want mine to last longer then just 40k miles.

And i never thought of the navi having a BULB in the back

All LCD (well, most these days) have a form of light that illuminates the pixels so you can actually see them - it's why you can view your laptop screen when it's pitch black out. I'm surprised the bulb died - those things should last for a LONG time - i have 10 year old laptops that are still going strong. Maybe yours was defective?

Your Navi screen should not burn out or blow out or die during your car's lifetime unless there was some sort of defect.

I would guess 10,000 to 15,000 hours which at 4 hours a day every day of the week...that's 10 years.

IMO if you are shutting off your screen to extend that 10 years to maybe 20 or 25 years...what's the point? Shutting it off will not defeat a defect.

i was rather suprised too, but in certain lighting i could stil make out the menu and push buttons and whatnot. no i never turned the screen off, i like keeping it on even when not using the nav just because the cars clock is also on the screen

I thought the extended warranty only covered drivetrain and not all aspects of the car?

My screen sometimes doesn't turn on at all. No signs of life. Not even any beeps when I push buttons. So far, turning off the car and turning the power back on a few seconds later fixes it.
