So it finally happened...4/21/09 R.I.P.
Leaving my school parking lot 2 weeks ago, and as I was exiting, the common problem talked about on Azine occured: Check Engine Light, TCS, and D5 all lit up (D5 started flashing). I had no power in my Tranny. While still in D5 pushing the gas, nothing...nothing...nothing....THEN i gained a little power not even close to normal and limped it back into my school parking lot.
After that, I restarted my car and everything felt normal, but check engine and TCS were still on. I drove it home 26 miles away on the expressway going no more than 60. I got home and went to the garage down my street, they ran the codes and said it was a "shift error". They turned off the Check Engine light, so I continued to drive it in Sport Shift mode, going extremely slow and concentrating on EVERY shift...almost driving it like a manual car.
Then yesterday, on the way back from school again, Check Engine Light came on and TCS while i was on the highway. I have a CL-P, THANK GOD!!! so i didn't experience the horrible failures the Type-S's get. I continued to drive/limp it home.
This morning I drove it to Pauly Acura in Highland Park (right by where Micheal Jordan's house is if anyone cares). They said it was a clutch failure, it was slipping, etc. They are gonna put in a new transmission. It will cost me $3500, EVERYTHING included. The Transmission also comes with a 3year/36,000mile warranty which is great. Good buy I'd say since im still not even close to being tired of my CL-P
R.I.P. first transmission, many good times!! ...and now i got 3 more years with my CL....BTW right now I have 91,000miles so im extremely satisfied with my cars performance until now. Many Type-S's get the 2nd tranny MUCH sooner than that...
just thought i'd share, it sucks ass, but im trying to stay positive...thank god i had plenty of $$$ saved up for something like this!

i asked them for all possible options: the warranty really sold me on spending the $3500. a 3 year/36,000 extended warranty is expensive enough...way i see it, im getting a new tranny, and labor is all paid for at the same time on top of a great warranty.
but i know it sucks, and if i was sick of the Acura CL and its bang for the buck, id be crying right now, no lie!
Plus i'll make the $3500 back in one summer of working, and also I want to keep my car as long as possible...so for my personal tastes and situation, I'm fine with it, but it still does hurt, damn it.

the type-s and premium cars both have the same failures. none is any worse then the other.
one of the venders, who is actually a dealer, has offered us 2000 for a new rebuilt tranny and thats without the core return too. you should have looked into that. cause it certainly wouldnt have cost you another 1.5k to swap it out.

My VIN number is out of the range to cover my tranny but David Mc David Acura called Acura of America and it cost me $500.00 and still got a 3/36 on my tranny. Ask them to call for you for a goodwill replacement.

Dude Acura has to help you on some of the cost.
My Tranny just got replaced at 120,000mi and Acura picked up 50% of the cost. I only paid $1200 out of pocket for my replacement tranny including 3yr /36,000 warranty.
Speaking of Which they are raping you at $3500! If I paid $1200 that means my tranny was $2400!

My acura dealer said they will pay for 1/2 of any tranny to replace it in ANY of the cars that were affected with the tranny recall at ANY time!

Hope eveyone can learn something from that. It is always a good idea to keep some swagga in savings just in case. Sorry for your loss man but at least everything will be taken care of and you'll be on the road again soon.

Funny cause you even quoted the whole message.

I thought there was a Recall Warranty on the Transmissions for up to 114,000 miles? My car had 111,000 miles and they replaced it all under warranty.
#23
Same here...I had a 2001 ABP Type-S with 103,000 miles (before my current 04 TL) and my original tranny blew. Huge clunks between gears and pretty much everything else that has been said in this thread and others. I took it to Acura and they replaced it free of charge, no questions asked. Any reason why you have to pay? (Besides the fact that you are getting an extended warranty on top of getting it replaced.)
#25
i knew they designed the damn transmission wrong from the get-go, but thought we were just screwed into paying it all...
ok in that case, i think its definitely worth a shot to see if they could cover most if not all of the cost...thanks guys, I never realized they could/would/should cover some of the $$$.
thanks for all advice too!
[[oh and alot of you people need to learn how to read...im just saying lol...been here long enough to know the questions people will ask so I included EVERYTHING possible in both my responses above, read and dont ask already answered questions. LOL!
"wait, OP...what car did you say you drove again?!" ]]

Sorry to hear about that bro, I had mine replaced free of charge a few miles before 100K. They should at least pay for half. That's what I'll be asking for if the 2nd tranny ever goes
#28
Some people have gotten the tranny replaced with over 100K miles... You might have to complain to someone other than the dealer... What's it called ? Acura Care or something ? It's like complaining to the regional manager...

Since the cars are older now, even some of the 03's are over the year limit...
#29
yeah i actually just got back from talking to them this morning in person...basically this is what he said (fyi, i am the 2nd owner and im servicing it at Pauly Acura where it was bought new).
1). i am past the year limit like Green said
2). they are replacing it with a rebuilt but a "different, and stronger" tranny that shouldn't have the same problems (BS?)
3). the recall, in 2004 i believe, was already serviced on my particular car...i guess i was driving with the 2nd gear oil jet kit this whole time??
4) im kinda fine with it since i basically got a new CL if the tranny swap is successful, ...and we all know any car, no matter what, is gonna cost you money, so if you like your car and want it to be running great, gotta spend the money, just the of an enthusiast. I just wish they would throw in a Supercharger for that price!!
My future plans?? I'm keeping this car defintely the 3 years/ 36,000miles on the warranty. From then, if everything is good (as I will drive it meticulously from now on), I will keep it forever and then buy a second fun sports car or fun sedan, with the CL as my daily driver beater...or Ill sell it if it acts up again and just get a normal, but nice daily car.
...and now i work my ass off and save as much money as possible for the next 3 years!

so i will pick up my car tomorrow morning...
Biglizard, did they give you back your old transmission since it was yours, or did they just keep it? my main question is what can i do with a transmission where the clutch failed, is it worth any money if someone buys it then replaces the clutch, rebuilds, and installs??

Heh, when I bought my CL-S my 3 year extended warranty cost about as much as what you paid for the transmission replacement.
and I dunno, trying to get someone at Acura to pay to have your transmission replaced sounds a little farfetched to me.... unless you get really lucky. Kind of hard to believe they would volunteer to lose money by putting a new or rebuilt transmission in your car....
