I think to go somewhere with this whole discussion we need to agree on what makes a good engine. From there, see which outperforms the other.

I started this days ago & keeps giving .......
Anyway, here it is I wasn't discussing cleaner more reliable, (which in any case we all want) why are we talking about civics on this this thing anyway? I think what we need to do is find to vehicles close to each other & just have them flog the hell out of it the race track..... anyone close to columbus ohio? anyway nice discussion though not much flaming......

im very proud of you all... NO PERSONAL ATTACKS! why cant this happen all the time.....

i personally dont care which engine is "cleaner", i test drove both along with countless other cars pricing between 15K and 40K (i know big gap) and for me the choice was the cl-s. To each his own I say!

im just happy this is staying civilized

THANK YOU ALL

Pontiac = Falls apart 10 years before Acura/Honda
Acura/Honda = Still looks and feels new after 10 years

Your pontiac is not faster.

oh yeah, well my dad can beat up your dad, my house is bigger than yours, etc. etc. etc. Second grade all over again, the nostalgia...baseball cards, lunch boxes, thermoses...

Drive what you like. The GTP and CLS are significantly different cars. One is geared around aggressive styling and motor with lots of low end power/torque, competetive pricing (once you include discounts because GTP msrp is kind of high), something to sell to the american family man that wants a trans am but needs room for 4 'real' people. The other is 'near' luxury; more refined than a pontiac, but essentially a thrifty man's bmw, mb, jag, we're just posers who see the bargain this car represents compared to the big name marquees. It's supposed to be quiet, smooth, refined engine/trans, etc.

However, I'm not knocking anyone's car here; and have actually been looking for a replacement for my wifes everyday car (98 olds achieva). She doesn't like the pontiac in your face styling, nor the orange gauges, or funky stitched and contoured seats that delineate the pontiac...so we've been watching for a good deal on a regal GS, just haven't found our car yet.

I don't think these cars compete on the showroom floor, sure they may on the street as may a geo metro and a viper, GMs competitors in this near luxury market are the (soon to be was) aurora and catera/CTS. The GTP/GS/Intrigue (now gone) GLS were better matched (in the buyer segment) to the camry xle, accord ex, probably even maxima.

Just some more thoughts on this never ending pissing match...look if you arch your back like this and really bear down...wow what distance...

Roo, very nice post!
Ditto.

Roo, you're in NY and I'm in Cali, but I got my 2000 GS in Oct 2000, and paid 20,800 new. It was a GM factory car with 300 miles on it. If you're patient, you can get very good deals. Also the GM financing is pretty good right now. However, I don't have a sunroof or heated seats.

Good luck.

But seriously...

I think it's been said before (by one or two or TWENTY people), but stock for stock (AUTO) the two are close; the 6-spd has the advantage over the GTP (stock for stock). Mod for mod, the GTP gets the nod.

Yet this thread continues to churn along...

I take offence to this statement. I bought my Acura not for the name.. I give a rats ass about owning a car for it's make. I care about quality, reliability, comfort, performance and value. The CLS had all of those to me.

I bought it because I was sick of the wonderful American Quality of the Dodge Intrepid, countless GM and Ford products my parents and family have owned over the years.

There are so many MB's, BMW's and Jaguars around here nowadays, it doesn't mean a thing. I like having my rare CL as opposed to the thousands of silver 3 series driving around here in NY/CT

Oh and BTW... I am a fan of the GTP.. I feel it also offers a nice mix of performance, nice styling and a great price. I just like the Acura quality and reliability better

GM just announced that the old 3800 is dead. They are currently revamping itheir V6 pushrod engines to include displacements up to 3.9 liters and equipping them with fuel saving cylinder activation technology. The engines will be aluminum heads/blocks with 4 valves per cylinder. GM said that the first engine from the family will be a 3.6 liter V-6 that makes 255hp and 250 ft/lbs through technologies such as variable valve timing .

Haha they are about 5 years late. LOL!

I guess since they were not making the engine list anymore they had to do something since all these other manufactures were making better engines.

That's what i was talking about, the value quotient is strong here. It offers many of the qualities that those other models i mentioned offer at a much better price; and much more car than you surely can buy in that price range (thinking about stripper 325, c23 [hatch], x type 2.5) as well as much more refinement than the american counterparts you name.

Perhaps I stand alone on this one, but throw me a 330 CI, or CLK 430, or S-type 4.0 for the same money i plunked down on the CLS and i'd be on the other side for sure. That's essentially what i wanted...but set a budget and lo and behold i'm driving a CLS.

[QUOTE]There are so many MB's, BMW's and Jaguars around here nowadays, it doesn't mean a thing. I like having my rare CL as opposed to the thousands of silver 3 series driving around here in NY/CT [/QUOTE

Also, as far as the CL-s standing alone in a sea of 3 series...good and bad, it's alone because it inspired so few and sold like crap...poor enough to get itself cancelled. Sure to our eyes, the ones that check out every car on and off the road, the CL is a looker; but other than the HID lamps the car doesn't grab the average buyer. That's honda for you, and probably part of the reason the CL-s has gone south. It's got smooth flowing lines and is easy on the eye, easy to look at, and easy to miss. It doesn't have the marquee image look of a mb, bmw, or jag, nor even that of the edgy CTS (love it or hate it, it gets noticed), the G35, 350Z, etc. These are the cars that capture peoples imagination and sell reasonably well (and not to kid ourselves, the TL sells well as it represents the accord generation getting a raise).

Is the CLS the best bang for the buck 'entry level luxury car' in my mind and probably everyone elses here, yes it is....but that doesn't always sell.

I don't know, a few years back, in 97, I had a thunderbird, V8, sport, 2 door luxury touring coupe, granted ford style (solid bargain, about 20 grand new with terrible depreciation and a bargain on the used car market with 205hp/280 torque, lthr, sunroof, climate control, etc.) discontinued. Camaro, bang for buck muscle car, 300+ rwhp, discontinued. CLS, bang for buck, entry level luxury, discontinued. Not a good thing for an automaker to have me buy their car...hell my wife's car, oldsmobile, the whole fricken company folded!

Nothing official, but from everything i've seen, in all the mags, etc. The future of acura, talks about the tl, rsx, mdx, rl and some other midsize 4 dr sedan, based on the european accord, essentially the RSX sedan. I could be wrong though.

My Huffy looks like a luxury car compared to that GTP... just look inside to see...

engine wise the 3800 is definetely outdated... the new GTP (doesn't it get a new name or was it just the concept that got a new name) looks very promising... hopefully the new one won't be as ugly as the last body style... the last body style looked too bulky...

Now other than the two-tone crap....what the hell is wrong with that cockpit? Nothing. It's very functional, has everything within easy reach, radio controls on the steering wheel, HUD, dual-zone climate, heated leather.......and you are going to compare it to a Huffy??? Oh wait, I just saw you have civic in your name.....nevermind.

To everyone else who doesn't have an economy car for their name: I know people rip on GM's reliance on plastic for the interior, and I know the interior pales when compared to the CL's or Maxima's or whatever else, but take it from somebody who has lived with it for 4 years......it's not that bad. Just an opinon.

Not announced, but DEFINITELY true. My good friend works at the Ohio Honda plant and it's pretty much common knowledge there that the 6-spd Accord will fill the niche and the CL-S is a goner...but who cares really. Just enjoy your car. Were you really gonna buy the next-gen CL anyway?

Hell yeah I wanna run, I always wanna run. And it looks like it should be a toss-up between us now.....you gotta like close races, win or lose it's fun. Of course it's always just a little more fun to win. Looks like I'll take you by about an inch.

Nice...and I also have good news....I'm FINALLY getting a firewire cable this week so I'll be able to post ALL my videos including our first races.

I'm interested to know what your 1/8 mile traps are typically when you go to the track...there was a GTP at the track this last weekend with intake, pully, and loudmouth cat-back...and he was trapping 80mph in the 1/8 and 96-97 in the 1/4. Whereas I trap 76.5 in the 1/8 and 97 in the 1/4....I'm making up over 4 MPH on him in the last 1/8 mile.....

Jim posted over at ClubGP, the CLS's(3 of em) were running low 14s(14.3 and .4) one of which was heacily modded. The GTPs were a bit faster, mid 13s. I still don't now if they actually lined up for any head to head though.
