Should I get extended warranty?
2001 CL-S, totally, clean, 21,500 miles (seriously). Warranty is up in Feb. AutoNation (owns my dealer) is selling an extended warranty (underwritten by AON, huge insurance company) that covers everything but normal service, tires, pads, etc. I can get 60 months/60,000 for $1,660. With free financing thats $172 down and $124/mo for 12 months. It's transferable or refundable pro-rata. I'll probably keep the car another 3-5 years. Do you guys think I ought to to for it?

Acura extended the warranty for the 01 and 02 models to 7 year/100k miles. It is under factory warranty, you shouldn't have to purchase anything

The 7 yr/100K miles warranty is for the transmission only. If your car is a CPO, the warranty is 12 mos or 12K miles, bumper to bumper. Before you purchase an extended warranty from AutoNation, check out www.1sourceautowarranty.com or www.warrantydirect.com first. Their rates are much lower and are supposedly reputable companies according to www.carbuyingtips.com. Plus, they offer different plans, depending on what you want covered.

If you do decide to get an extended warranty, don’t go with ANYTHING besides a genuine Honda/AcuraCare plan.
Do a search here and you’ll find lots of opinions & suggestions on if it’s worth getting one.
And you’ll also find some horror stories from people who went with 3rd party plans and got screwed in the long run when they attempted to make a claim.

That was back in Feb/Mar 2004 timeframe and I believe the price has since gone up.
And the prices also go up as the car gets older when you pass 2YR/24K or 3YR/36K miles.
I got in before the 2YR time passed and it takes the first jump.
I could have gone 7/100K for 200 more, but I only drive about 8-9K a year so I’ll hit the 7-Years before I ever come close to 100K.
March will be 3-Years for me and I’m only at 25,000 miles right now.
If you fill out the request form online they will send you the current price for the different plans.

Too many people have reported too many problems with extended warranties that are not owned by the manufacturer.
I also got mine online from http://www.curryacuracare.com/ I also got a quote from http://acuraofmissionviejo.com/acura...d-warranty.asp that was $5 more. No sales tax on extended warranties, so shop around even locally. Ask your dealer if s/he can better the online rates too.

A guy at work here was just telling me he bought an extended warranty at the dealer for his wife’s Subaru.
Not sure of the model, (outback 4WD wagon I think) but he paid nearly 1,800 bucks for a 6YR 100K mile plan.
I thought that was kinda HIGH, but I’m not familiar with the repair history for them.
She drives a lot and it already has 37,000 and the car is only 2 years old.

I bought mine from Acura of Mission Viejo. $1300 for 7 years and 100000 miles and zero deductible. Cheap insurance for a car I plan to keep for a long time. They even have a plan that splits the total into 12 payments interest free!!!

Thanks -- especially Shawn S and Slimey. Still haven't heard back from Curry, but talked to a guy at Acura of Mission Viejo which is only about 45 minutes down the freeway from me. They're offering me the Honda/Accura 7yr/75,000 warranty for $1,065, which seems pretty good (remember, my car is almost 4 years old with 21,000 miles). They just want to look at the car and validate the spedo.
I've been doing some checking on the AON backed warranty that AutoNation is pushing. Turns out that AON is the second biggest insurance broker around, but they are about to get sued by the NY attorney general and there's a bunch of class action suits against them. I suppose they won't go out of business, but it's certainly not like having the warranty directly with Honda/Acura.
Anyhow, when I did the numbers I realized that the Honda/Acura deal with Mission Viejo is only $3/mo more (negligible), and I'm not so sure I'd really keep the car much more than another 3 years, if that. So I'm thinking I'll probably do the deal with Mission Viejo.
I guess the bottom line is -- do you guys think that it's a good bet to put out $1,065 for 3 additional years (knowing that the tranny is already covered)?

I don't think there's a right or wrong answer. On the on hand, Honda's a pretty bullet-proof and the odds of a major problem are low. On the other hand, it's not that hard to rack up $1000 in car repairs with even what seems to be a minor problem. The extended warranty is pretty comprehensive, and covers nearly every non-wearable part with labor.
It's like any other insurance policy: you hope you won't have to use it, but you're glad that it's there if you have to use it.
I think if you can afford it, and you're planning on keeping the car beyond the factory warranty, then it's worth it. IMHO, YMMV...

Check to see if the extended warranty can be transferred to another buyer should you sell the car. If so, that's another reason (I think) to go for the deal you found. I'm using the ext warranty to help sell my 2001 CL. Peace of mind for the buyer ... can be better than some of the CPO deals found at the dealers.

Thanks for all the info. I've decided to go for the Acura/Honda warranty. Also found out that the 3rd party warranties, even if they don't go bust, often don't use orig eqip replacement parts.
I'm getting it from Acura of Mission Viejo -- three more years for $1,065 (no deductible). They had the best prices I could find. For what it's worth, I found Currey impossible to deal with -- they didn't return emails or calls.
Also, the warranty is transferable and you can get a pro-rata refund at any time, so I figure I'll sleep easy with it. Thanks again. You guys really helped me with this one.
