As far as i know the only difference is that you can control when you shift from 1->2 and carry first all the way to redline when you do it manually.

Might be my imagination, but I think the tranny actually shifts faster doing 1-2-D3-D4 than using SS.

I know doing that with a car without SS is bad, but I'm not sure if that's the case with our cars.

Several people have told me to take it straight thru the gears.

This is correct, you are able to hold first ALL the way up to redline, because the computer will bump it up a gear when in SS mode.

I'm not sure if its bad for the transmission or not.

I would imagine not.

Anyone shed some light on this?

I don't think going up is bad only shifting down, I do this in my accord and have had no problems but I have never downshifted it except from D4 to D3, which is ok according to the manual. So as long as jsut upshift manualy there is prob no problem, But I would NEVER manualy downshift an auto tranny unless it is stated to be ok in the manual or u are in something special like SS in our cars.

Drag racing/street racing from a stop (shouldn't be done in the first place): Manually shift from D1 to D5

Highway Racing (when in motion obviously): Use SS

Twisties/a lot of corners: Use SS

Nvr downshift when in auto mode (i.e D5 to D3).
ALthough Acura says it isn't a problem, try avoiding downshifting from D5 to D4 just to play it safe.

If ne one wants to add anything or correct go straight ahead, but politely

I have been shifting "throught the gate" for 20k miles. The response seems firmer and quicker than using SS. I only use SS on the highway in 3, 4 and 5. SS limits your downshift into 2 nd and 3rd if you go in at about 5 k or more. You can do whatever you ant throught the gate. ie try going into 2nd gear at 60 in ss or 3rd at 85 the gear digit flashes unless you tap the brakes or let off the throttle. Nothing worse than being at 4000rpm if you have it to the floor and cant downshift....
