Satellite Radio

Chicago radio stations get worse by the week, so I am getting a satellite radio Wednesday. The Pioneer FM Modulated unit.

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with the unit, and will a magnetic antenna (Terk TRK-SR2) stick to the trunk or is it composite? I have not looked into antennas yet because a buddy of mine is hooking me up with the whole thing. Does anyone have one or know of a good looking antenna that is available?

So far there are two different kinds of antennas out right now and they both go for $1oo. The has been a huge problem with the magnetic antenna's and they are recalling alot of them because they suck. The other antenna is one that has sticky pads that can go on the rear window but those also suck. They seem to be flying off when the car gets going. Plus on a car they look horrible. They look like a sharks fin and you also run the chance that someone will rip it off cinse they come off so easy. If you are putting it on an SUV then you can at least hide it up on the rack so its not so out in the open. Your best bet is to just put the antenna on your rear deck inside the car. Its out of the way and it won;t be falling off. But good choice with the FM satellite radio. Give it a few years and it will be in everyones car. And alot cheeper. Good luck!

Interesting. Commercial-free is a big plus but do you think they'll stick to it??? Doesn't look like sirius is set up yet though. You can't subscribe online (I couldn't even find the service rates) and they don't offer an FM mudulation unit yet. I wonder if I can switch to Sirius from the XM Pioneer unit???

I hate to be a guinea pig on this, but I am so sick of shitty Chicago radio and I've been listening to CDs for like 2 years straight.

guys not all of the XMs channels have comercials

XM limits advertising on most channels. That concentration of programming creates a powerful showcase for your commercial announcements. In addition, commercial-free channels are available for sponsorship.

i think right now theres 30 comercial free channels.. im not sure ill get you an exact this week when im at CES

no both Sirius and XM are setup...they both have all their satellites set up in the atmosphere and have tested their services...as of this past October, they began broadcasting...here's the thing...u need to get the whole system, which is the actual radio unit, and activate the service...i believe it's $12.95 or $14.95 a month...u got 2 options...equip Sirius to an existing FM radio (which i think the site explains more), or just get a designed unit like the ones BMW is offering for the '02 line...Sirius really changed their website since last time i looked at it, and it's offering less info than it used to ...so i guess check around the sitemap to see info bout the units they offer, the 60-100 channels they offer, etc.

Sorry for veering slightly off topic. Eclipse23, what exactly did you do with your E-ZPass tag? I've been looking to get something stealthier than the white velcro that comes with it.

You might want to wait until the CES show is over, there might be some new models that come out that are 2nd gen. I'm probably going to get it in a year or 2 but I want a small little antenna similar to our gps

I think you can preview Sirus now online -

Sirius offers its music channels on Web site
LAS VEGAS, Jan 7 (Reuters) - Satellite radio broadcaster Sirius Satellite Radio (NasdaqNM:SIRI - news) on Monday said it began offering its 60 commercial-free music channels on its Web site ahead of the launch of its subscription radio satellite service next month.

``Giving consumers a way to experience Sirius' 60 original channels of commercial-free music will drive subscriptions to our service,'' said Philip Pilla, Sirius' Vice President, Consumer Marketing.

Sirius said it chose Microsoft Corp's (NasdaqNM:MSFT - news) Windows Media Technologies to stream its 60 live music channels.

The company's chief rival, XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. (NasdaqNM:XMSR - news), had its satellite radio service up and running late last year, in time for the holiday shopping season.

Has anyone actually added the satellite radio yet? I'm curious how the quality of sound from the FM-modulated unit is?

Whats the point of satellite radio?

Why not just get an Mp3 player?

I bet I have more music on my home system than you could hear on XM radio over the course of 4-5 years! LOL!

plus, do you drive your car over 100 miles/day?

It doesn't make sense, unless you're in your car for 4-6 hours/day EVERY DAY.
