resale on CL-S
I have a 2001 CL TypeS w/NAVI
I am trying to trade it in because I need to have a truck this summer and the CL does not fit into the picture for now.
Here is my issue - the BEST I can get for trade in is $21,000 - I consider this to be quite rediculous.
So I checked around to see what is going on. It appears that the used car manager at the dealer I bought the car has talked to every single dealer that I have tried to trade in at. None of the dealers that I spoke to know anything about Acura so they call the Acura dealers int he area to see what they are worth.
So I called the used car manager at the dealer I purchased the car from and he knew my car down to the amount of miles already because he has talked to every dealer that I have tried to trade the car in at.
I asked him why the hell the car has dropped so much so fast - I mean - I though Acura's had a good resale value. He told me that he would be lucky to get $24k for a used '01 CL-S - he siad that they had OVER 30 NEW CL's on the lot! He said that they could not sell more than 2 new ones a month! Ths shocked me a bit to say the least. I asked him why? He said supply and demand. I said - well - why the hell do you have 30 of them on your lot if you cannot sell them? He said that supply and emand again!
Seems to me that the purchaser should be fired for keeping so many in stock - I mean - you do not drive supply and demand by ordering a huge overstock! So this led me to believe that he was full of sh*t - So I called back later and asked for a new car sales person. I asked this person exactly how many new cl and cls's that they had. He said 3 of the CL and 12 CL TypeS. I asked him why they had so many CL TypeS and he could not respond - he did not even make something up. Just didn't respond.
The dealer did not have a single used '01 CL on the lot either. I checked around the net and it seems that they are resaling retail for about 29K (asking price) So any good dealer after haggling should be able to get 27k for it. So why are the Acura dealers telling other dealers that they would not pay a penny over 21K for one? Seems to me that the dealers themselves are driving down the retail value of this car - 3 dealers in my area would not even talk above 21k for trade in on this car.
I guess I just have to hope it gets stolen and prked in front of a train to get at least a decent protion of my money out of it.
So much for resale value.
Thanks for letting me vent. I am on my way to the Acura dealer now to see what the have on the lot.

I am not at all surprised by the actions of your dealer. I traded my 97 cl three months ago. Looking back, I should have kept it and sold it myself, but hindsight is always 20/20.
Anyway, I had an immaculate 97 2.2 cl. Perfect car in every way. No dings, dents or scratches. Had every oil change and service recipt in a book. Recorded and tracked every tank of gas that I ever put in the car. Never spent a night outside my garage. 49k miles and had 7k on new tires.
Goodson Acura offered me 7 grand. Seven f-ing grand! I protested and Goodson, who by the way had sold me that car and my 94 integra, did not even want to negotiate. Told me to take it to Car Max and see what they would give me. They said that CL's just don't hold their value as much as other Acura's. I kid you not. While I was being fed this line of bs, a salesman at a nearby desk was telling a prospective buyer of a new CL, of great benefit of the high resale of the car. At that point I got up and walked.
I went over to Vandgergriff Acura in nearby Arlington the next day and left with my type s. They gave me 9500 for my CL, and beat Goodson's CLS price by $300. I still think I got raped by accepting $9500 for my trade, but like many of you, my good judgement was temporarily lost by the greatness of the CLS.
If you have the time and patience, retail your car yourself. Whenever you trade at a dealer, they get you coming and going.

you know what, buy a "limited edition" gold emblem and slap on your CLS trunk, then you'd have a 2001 Acura CL Type S Limited Edition, and your bluebook is bound to go up...
hahah... joking...
yeah, I kind of expected our CLS have a so-so bluebook, but didn't know it is that bad.
Oh well...

$21K is freakin' ridiculous. Sorry, the CL may not have great resale, but it's still better than most. Keep in mind many dealers will try and tell you anything just to try and get you to screw yourself. It costs him NOTHING to flat out lie to you. You should be able to get AT LEAST $24K on a trade and possibly as high as $25K depending upon miles and such.

Tell them its an ACURA not a chevy or ford. my best suggestion would be either ebay or go sell it out of state.

thinking about it though,
1) it's a coupe, so the resale isn't gonna be as great as a similar sedan (ie tl), so don't expect the same value holding as a sedan.
2) the way the market is, demand for everything this expensive is kinda low.
3) this car is still too new to have enough used ones out to post anykind of publishable resale value.
4) of course dealers are gonna give you bullshit answers like that, it's their job to get the car for as low as they can and then sell it for as high as they can. you think a dealer's actually gonna sell this car for only $24k if it's in good condition?
he's pretty much full of shitt, 'cuz he told you they had 30 on the lot.
if he lied about that, why would he tell the truth about how much he can sell them for?

for those of you that mentioned bule book value go to kellybluebook.com and you will see that there is no published blue book value for the CL S yet. the dealers are all trying to ram it straight up your ass pal....they know that anyone trying to unload a CL Type S already must be in a bind and they are trying to take advantage of you. you can bet your ass that if you traded that car for 21k today he would have it stickered at about 29k tomorrow, and would probably get 27k for it. Bottom line is that it has nothing to do with the car depreciating, but everything to do with them trying to put the screws to ya....

I am a car dealer and let me tell you something about trade in. You trade a car in and they are going to give you rock bottom so they can sell your car and make money, then sell you the car you are buying and make money.
The main thing about the CL-S right now is.
1. It is a 2001 and you have already
prob. had it a year or almost close to it. And it is just 2001.
2. Second of all, give it time. The car has been out 12 monthes and you are trying to get rid of it. People went crazy over the car and Acura made a few of them, and most dealers just got the last little bit of them for 2001.
3. You need to resale the car your self at this time. Due to the age of the car, it is to early for final est. to be made. I think the car will have great resale value after a another year or so. Just look at the good resale value of the Legend coupe!!!

My experience says put it in your local paper and put a sign on it. Price it to MOVE. Ask at least $26,000 and I bet you'll sell it quick. In the ad and on the car, put down the features. Tell 'em about the 260HP, leather, 6 CD in dash, climate control, auto everything, and remote locking system. You gotta get into "sales mode" my man.
Sorry but I'm in sales .... and remember, when someone says to you "I'll come by tomorrow" ... be sure to tell them that you got someone stopping by TODAY and they sounded really interested. But of course you explain that money talks ...
Rule #1 for sales ... people want what they can't (or don't think they can) have!

The exact same crap happened to me! I went to Goodson first and test drove the CL-S twice and CL once. I was ready to buy right then, but the would not negotiate for my trade. I took my car to CarMax, got it appraised, went back to Goodson and they still said, "Too high." So, I went to Vandergriff. No problems there! They sold me the CL-S for what I negotiated at Goodson and gave $3,000 more for trade than Goodson would.
I must say this though, Goodson has better prices on parts than Vandergriff.

Last fall these cars were hard to come by. I would suspect the buyers at the dealers over-reacted to that demand and the market pulled back and the demand dried up (I know looking at my portfolio that I wish I had an extra $32k in the bank). Then the cars came in the buyers were staying home and thus he got screwed too. The last thing he wants is to take on a used one and try to move that too. None of this surprises me. Sell it yourself, get your best price and chaulk it up to experience.

gotta agree, on autotrader.com the cars aren't selling for NEARLY that cheap, still in the 28k+ range...
Always worked for me, just bribe a backup, be it a dad, mom or someone who can cover you if you have a lapse of time w/o a car.
Good luck

Ok, you need to do a bit of a reality check here. If new ones are selling for invoice or under, no dealer is going to sell your for $28-$29k.
I've been fighting the same uphill battle with dealers trying to lease a CL-S. I can't get near bluebook wholesale for my trade. After a month of trying, I've learned a few things.
1) be realistic about the market for your car. If dealers are overstocked on new ones, near the end of a model year, you're not going to get a good trade in.
2) coupes, in general, are less marketable than sedans. they just are. That's not to say that over time, it won't hold it's value as well, but right now, they're jus not selling as well.
3) sellng yourself is always the best way to go, if you can. you'll generally do much better, and get somewhere between published bluebook wholesale and retail.
There ARE people that'll buy your car used. Depending on mileage and condition, you'll get a bit less than they'd pay for a dealer demo with a new car warranty, but it will sell. Give it some time.

You need to calm down. What do you expect when you sell a brand new car right after you bought it a few months ago?
Besides, this is still a lot better than American cars. My friend with a 1999 Grand Prix GT who bought it brand new for $25k, just went to the dealer and asked them what they would give him for it. They said only $14k!!! That's $11k difference in less than two years! Now that's harsh!

I'd be intersted in Buying a "slightly used" CL-S 2001 from an Individual. Nothing I'd love more than BEATIN the Sales Tax Issue

Update:
I got a dealer to give me 24K for the car and took the offer.
24K + the tax I saved + $$ returned from canceling the extended service contract = Me not having to go through hassle of selling car outright and having my new truck asap
Thanks for all your input.

aaroncon,
I know that it kind of sucks well you hear how much a dealer is willing to pay you for your car. In this case he really is not that much off what the car is worth..Being a 2001 it is really hard to tell what the car is worth, and as a dealer the worse thing they could do is pay to much for a car that they have 12 brand new ones on the lot..I just went on and looked to see what the CLS are doing at dealer auctions and the avg. is 24,233 with 7,782 miles..and the worst being 21,000 and best 26,000...So the dealer offering you 21,000 is not that far off..He was just playing it on the safe side..Dealers really don't want to pay as much as they do at auction when someone walks in off the street as a trade-in, unless they really want to have your car, and it doesn't sound like he really wants your car right now!!Your best bet is as people have said before and sell it on your own. You should be able to get around 26-27 for it..Just to let you know I buy car for a job, and travel all over the country to different auctions...And as a guide, I bought mine in sept. w/o nav. for 25,600 with 2,245 mile on it..But good luck with selling it, and hope this can help..
