Removable Engine Mods?

So I got my '01 cls for my 16th birthday and I've been saving up to do a couple of engine mods before I move away to college. The problem is, whatever I do can not be permanent bcuz my dad is supposedly selling the car if I go to school out of state. I've been looking at installing a cai but I'm not totally sure if that can be compeletly undone.

Does anyone have any recommendations for things that I can do to squeeze a few more horses out of the engine? and can anyone point me to a thread for instructions to install a cai on my '01 cls, i can't seem to find any :shakehead ...

Unless youre messing with the internals, any bolt on can be removed without much trouble.

And there are no DIY CAI install................as far as i know..............because its really easy to do

Good luck and feel free to ask more questions if needed

The reason i asked is cuz i've heard about people having problems relocating their sensor, having to drill through the intake to make some lines fit properly...etc.

intake and exhaust are definitely the two easiest bolt-ons

If you have ANY mechanical inclination at all and the right tools I can't see how you'd run into a serious problem.

Well, I've got access to a machine shop and some decent stock aluminum piping so I was thinking about making my own cai and then just buying the filter because $250 is ridiculous for some bent pipes ...

Also, I was browsing around HMT.com and I was going to start work on a turbo. If I got all the dimensions and pipe shapes down in a prototype I'd like to possibly start making a few copies to sell here on the site since no company really does a turbo assembly just for our car. The ones that do are outrageously expensive and I could do most of the fabrication by hand and save people some money. I wouldn't sell the turbo itself bcuz people have different preferences.

Is there a lot of cutting/welding that needs to be done so that it will fit or is it mostly just moving lines around once you have the setup built?

And is there any way to get oil to that damn thing without swiss cheesing my oil pan . I'd really like to know about a stand alone oil pan/unit.

Wait..I'm confused..you said you didn't want any major modifications that couldn't easily be removed, yet you want to drop a few G's on a turbo? You said you weren't sure if a CAI could be easily undone yet you want to go FI?

I think you should do some research before you get the flaming of a lifetime..

No need to be sorry bro, we're all here to help!

Just wasn't quite sure what you were getting at there. If you need any build advice there are tons of it in Search, and you can PM us as well! From what I've gathered most (notall) people here know their stuff when it comes to modding these cars.

Pretty much everything available for the CL is a bolt on and can be removed... Just keep the stock parts to put back on the car when the bolt-on's are removed...

Lots of guys return their cars to stock before selling or trading in...

Bolt-ons are the best way to go in your situation. I wouldn't get too crazy on them because of the cost to sell factor and how many years left you have in high school. You lose in any situation...this car is a money pit.

Just keep it stock and call it a day.

EDIT: if you wanted to you can remove the rear cans...check out what cltypslow did to his...

the easiest by far that gives you the most horses is just taking out the intake resonator and dropping in a better filter

^ Incorrect.

Taking out the intake res is just for sound. You'll barely make 3 hp.

A turbo kit isn't really the ideal piece together to be removed scenario but can def be done. As for selling them you would need to pay to become an official seller on the site

he wanted something cheap and to give him more horses so this is free and it gives you a hp increase if im incorrect what is better than a free mod that actually helps with performance?

I'm a bit confused is the intake res the plate on the top of the engine or is it the box that the air intake sits in?

If its the box, then won't I have to buy a filter for it? Or buy a short ram intake?

Yes its free, and I'm not disagreeing with you in the fact that its a great mod to do and yes it does help your intake breathe a little bit better. But the way you made it seem up there ^ with the "easiest for the most horses" was the part I was stating to be incorrect. There are easier mods that provide somewhat similar yields and taking out your intake resonator might yield you like...1 or 2 hp, a gain so insignificant its negligible.

It seems like if I'm gonna remove the resonator I'd be better off just installing that cai I've been working on. Now I have to convince my dad that I'm not gonna ruin the car by taking it off. That def made it on my mod (sorta) list. Has anyone had any luck with just buying some aluminum elbows and pipes and doing a cai themselves??
