Rear View Mirror Problem

Anyone have this happen to their rear view mirror? Very strange, and now most of it has a double reflection. I've tried 'auto' versus not and that doesn't help. Very annoying.

Is there a fix or do I just need to replace it?

My local Acura dealer replaced my mirror for free when only 1/2 of the mirror would dim even though the car was past warranty. Unfortuantely, when I went to pick it up, they had cracked the windshield in getting the mirror off so replaced that for free as well (probably helped that I noticed windshield crack before I left).

Wow this is funny. And you're in Texas too? I got in my car on Monday and my mirror looked just like that. I even had my windows cracked and a sunscreen in the windshield. It was about 95 degrees the day it happened. The mirror leaks a black goo from the bottom and is corrosive, so keep a towel wrapped around your mirror or take it down.

The process to remove the mirror is very simple and doesn't take more than 5 minutes. Remove the small black plastic cover piece by the windshield. Remove the holder for sunglasses/Map Lights. 2 screws in glasses holder, then remove the plastic piece for the lights with a flathead screw and remove the two screws there. Pull the entire plastic housing down and unplug the maplights and mirror. The mirror slides right off the holder on the windshield. Give it a gentle bump forwards from the top and it'll slide right off.

Monday: Found the mirror messed up in the evening. I read up on the forums and found that Magna Donnelly (the company that makes the mirrors) was taking care of the problems. Took the mirror off.

Tuesday: Called Magna Donnelly and talked to someone there. They were replacing the mirrors for free until January of this year. Honda/Acura has told them to stop. Said to call the local Acura Dealer instead. Called MacChurchill Acura, they said to talk to Acura's Customer Service. Talked to them, they then asked me to take it to MacChurchill Acura for them to see it and make a report on it.

Wednesday: Went to Acura dealer, they looked at it, told me it'll cost $193 to replace the mirror. Asked them about goodwill replacement. Kept me waiting for 3 hours until they said they can't do it saying Mileage/Year is too high/old. Called Acura Customer Service and raised hell. They said some case manager would call back within 24 hours.

Thursday: Didn't receive a call, So I called them back and they said someone would call me Friday.

Friday: No call.

You can bet they're getting a call as soon as the long weekend is over. How many years have to go by until a rearview mirror goes bad?

If you talk to Acura, let me know what they say. I'll keep ya'll updated on whats going on here too.

I'll be keeping up with this thread......the mirror in mine has looked like that (but smaller "hole") since I bought the car about 3 months ago. I keep mine in a garage and it doesn't sit outside often, so maybe that'll keep it from spreading/exploding too soon......

If you send it off to the company that makes it they will replace it for free.

Magna Donnelly WILL NOT replace the mirrors as of January 2008 stating that Honda/Acura has told them to stop. The best thing to do is call Acura's Customer Service 1-800-382-2238 and let them know theres a problem. If you talk to someone named Julian, thats even better lol. I've posted a complaint with the NHTSA as well and suggest others do this as well.

Also, the new auto-dim mirrors Magna Donnelly makes for Acura have a solid plate in them rather than liquid (the replacements they used to be sending out didn't have the liquid in them either).

And please guys, if you have 2 ounces of technical know-how, don't pay the dealer for installation... removal and installation is really simple, it just slides right off the mount thats on the windshield. The mirrors are available online for approximately $75-80 (or less if you check eBay). 2000-2003 TL, 01-03 Cl, and 01-03 MDX all take the same mirror... among others.

Mirror Issue

I noticed a straight line in my mirror probably 5 months ago but did not think much of it. After that we then noticed that the mirror dimming feature was not working properly and given my car is a 2001 just wrote it off as old age. Then yesterday got into the car and noticed some black tar like bumps on the center console that would not come off. I called the Acura Customer Service and they claimed they had not heard of this problem (right...).

Based on everything that I have read today on all the forums it appears that Magna Donnelly put the same mirrors in other makes of cars who have reported the same issue with the mirror. I reported mine today to the NHTSA in hopes that some type of communication would go out to owners of these mirrors to warn them of the hazardous materials that may leak from them and the health hazards that may result from contact with the fluid.

I am going to try to call Magna Donnelly tomorrow and will update the post with the results of that phone call. Thanks to everyone for posting all the information - I am greatly appreciative.

I agree, just look for a new one online. I had the same problem with mine and never heard back from MD, no matter how many messages I left or how many emails i sent. Got a new one on ebay and replaced it in five minutes. I don't know how people crack their windshields replacing them cause it slides right off once you take off the proper pieces.

I ordered a new mirror today, cost $70.
I did all I could to get Acura to replace it to no avail... I mean, rear-view mirrors go bad all the time right?

Also, I can't stop to get my mirror to stop rattling. It was never like this before until I took it down and put it back up. Any tips?

Is it the mirror or the sunglasses holder?

When I replaced my mirror I didn't screw the sunglasses holder back on very tight and after a couple days of highway driving it was shaking like crazy. Just torqued it down a bit and good as new!

If it is the mirror, just take it off again and if you look at the metal 'rails' that the hold the mirror to the window bracket, they can be tightened down. just get a solid pair of pliers and use some elbow grease to bend them inward a little bit. Test fit until its nice and snug. Worked for me!
