rear main seal question

i searched and i dont think this topic has been covered so here it is.

make a long story short...my rear main is leaking like crazy all over the place.

i just got my tranny replaced from acura and i was wondering if when they change the tranny do they have to take apart that area where the seal was? i think if they do they put the old crappy used seal back on after taking it apart i just find it ironic that everything in that area was fine until i got the tranny replaced. now they want to charge me 900 bucks for a 50 dollar seal to be installed.

cliffs: is the rear main seal tampered with during new tranny install?

maybe someone with a helms manual can chime in.

thanks in advance.

it's standard procedure to replace seals/gaskets, if they didnt, they should be liable for it. i see no reason their work isn't guaranteed. since it's a result of what they did. it wouldn't not have prematurely leaked if they had done the job properly. i would raise hell.

i agree. go in there and tell them how it's going to be. if the gasket had any signs of wear they should of notified you. it's not the first tranny acura has had to change so they know.

there is no reason to mess with the rear main seal during tranny installation unless it is already leaking.

I had my clutch replaced when my rear main seal started leaking, but that was only because the tranny and flywheel/clutch assembly has to come out to replace the seal.

My rear main seal is bing changed now on my CLS6mt. it is a nine dollar part and should have been changed when the tranny was out. THAT IS NOT TO SAY IS IS S.O.P. TO CHANGE IT. It does not have to be tampered with to remove the the tranny. the only reason they would have changed it is if the mechanic was thinking of you down the road or if you had asked. Heat from the blown tranny is about the only think that could have caused it to fail. That and regular wear and tear. good luck

The rear main seal isnt tampered with or removed or any thing when replacing the tranny. Nothing is slid thru it durring the install/removal.

I was told by my service writer that it's only S.O.P. when changing the clutch on a manual. I think on the auto, it's your expense. This does raise a good point though. Anyone having a tranny replaced under warranty should probably ask the dealer to replace the rear main as a preventitive measure. Cost should be minimal at that time.

the rear main is about ten dollars. I like your point for the auto guys. you all should demand that your rear main is changed when tranny is pulled. Offer to pay for it. It cant be more than 100 parts included. its very easy to change once the trany is out.
