Rear main seal leak questions

I went to Acura and a rear main seal leak was found. I saw the leak with my own eyes and oil was leaking out. They told me that the transmission would need to be removed, along with other engine parts in order to do the repair. They quoted me $1000 for the job. Is this a fair price? Is there a better place to get this type of work done? Is there a different type of shop that can do a perfect job? Is there any chance to get this claimed under the 100,000 mile transmission warranty? Thanks.

That price seems a little high. I had to pay $700 to have the tranny R&R'ed.

Besides taking out the tranny, a rear main seal is simple. A reputable Honda/Acura mech should be just fine.

There is now way they will cover it under the tranny warranty. It is not a tranny problem. The rear main seal is part of the engine.

IIRC, there was a TSB on this at one time or another. I remember having this seal replaced under warranty soon after I purchased my car in 2002.

Searched on the forum, can't find any TSB for rear main seal leak. $1000 is pretty pricey for me right now. The guy said it looks like it's been 2-3 months that its been leaking, I saw the moisture on the cover, but I haven't seen any oil dripping on my designated parking spot so whats the deal? Any chance to find if I can get it done under warranty, I've had my transmission replaced twice, last time was a long time ago though. 69,000 miles

Are you still under warranty? I'm guessing not.

800 - 1000 is probably in range for that job at the dealer. If it's not leaking too bad, you could always live with it until it get worse.

So nothing I can do about trying to get it under warranty through the tranny warranty or a TSB?

Again, the rear main seal has nothing to do with the tranny.

Quality control sucks, I've had the car for 6.5 years and now have to make a $1k repair because of a damn seal. What a joke.

Before paying $1k is there any way to confirm that it is what they say it is? I saw that the area was wet, but how can you confirm there is a main rear seal leak?

You got to expect to make some repairs on a car that's 6.5 years old.
