this is off-topic, though i want everyone to read this, not just the ones that go to the ramblings forum.

i doubt this would get moved by a mod, but if it does, thats not right.

What's even more fucked up is this thing is only going to happen more because of the stupid fucks that race on the streets here in Houston. All you guys that get your kicks off of racing in neighborhoods and populated areas, this could have been you.

a search of the chronicle archives turns up no mention of such an incident.

the only hit-and-runs recently was one in galveston (dobie high school kid killed at the ferry landing), a woman hit and dragged 5 blocks by a pickup truck whose driver still hasn't been found, and a little boy hit by a van in a crosswalk whose survived and is recovering.

the original poster says he's from houston, but I suppose it could have been another area.

it sounds like typical internet glurge to me.

completely agreed.....just like the people getting aids by people sticking infected needles in them. I agree street racing in populated areas is dangerous and stupid. But in unpopulated areas like where most street races take place i feel is fine. And if the police and authorities really wanna stop street racing they need to do it themselves, a new track somewhere is always needed.

I agree also. I see so many "fake" stories come across the internet it can make you callous. But maybe (even if the story is fake) we should all reconsider flooring it when it's not perfectly safe (desert/track, absolutely positively open road)..

The thing is you don't have to be going 130.
Last year I was dispatched to an accident on upper Main Street. It runs through the center of the University of Vermont. During the school year there is massive pedestrian traffic, as students go from the dorm to classroom, and back. On this particular bright sunny day, a tall good-looking junior was crossing the four-lane street. The first lane of traffic stopped for her letting her into the cross walk. Once she was in she had right of way over traffic. In the second lane was a young man who was toddling along at about 35 or 40mph. The posted speed is 25mph. Needless to say he ends up running this gorgeous thing done. She survived and will be able to walk with the help of a metal rod inserted in her left leg. Was this guy only going 10 or 15 miles over the speed limit, yes. His he going to get f*&# in court and in the wallet because of it, YEP.

The point here is a majority of serious accidents happen in the range of 10 to 20 miles over the speed limit. So if you want to drive at high speeds on public streets, go right ahead. But if you get a ticket don’t go crying about it, because I sure you that like myself, when a issuing a ticket to someone, it’s the moments like this that motivate us.

Hey, someone post this over there as I don't have access to the site. The guys agument that the kid would NOT be charged with 3 counts of vehicular manslaugther is incorrect. He can and would be charged! It has happened in the past! On the Dateline show on street racing they had a guy who was racing and the car he was racing hit a pedastrian at about 110 or 120, killing her instantly! Both the driver hitting the lady and the guy racing him were charged with vehicular manslaughter! the guy that was racing but didn't strike her got something like 1-2 years in jail. The other guy got the max (can't recall what it was). Still think it's BS they wouldn't charge the guy? If your racing someone and that race causes an accident (even if you are not involved) you ARE JUST AS LIABLE AND THE PARTIES INVOLVED IN THE ACCIDENT. Your behavior contributed to the accident and result.

I dont know if this is real or not, but its not like its a story that could never happen. I bet the same thing has happened before. Personally, I havent raced or speeded on any streets, its from a fear of cops i have formed when it comes to tickets. Its really weird, I am not afraid of the actual cop, just afraid of getting tickets. I have had 9 traffic convictions, and my insurance is currently $12 000 a year!..i have two tickets that i am going to court for on the 20th too!! Although I have contacted the cop on my own time and taken care of that..its still scary shit for me.

But I think the people that drive crazy like how this guy describes should not have their license.

Twice I have almost been killed by a driver like this.

That's funny that my friends think I'm crazy for being paranoid everytime I'm out on foot around traffic.

I'm afraid to cross the street, I don't stand on street corners, and I exit my vehicle and leave the freeway when I'm stopped. Let me clarify. I move quickly across roadways where vehicles are not completely stopped. I never stand on the street corner. Maybe several yards off the corner or behind a lamp pole or bus stop [bench]. If I have to stop my car on the freeway, I'm there for only a hot minute or I get out of the car and leave the freeway. No way I'm gonna get hit by a car because I don't spend enough time near moving vehicles unprotected.

130mph in a residential area of 25mph. If you've ever been 130mph before, you know this [b]can't[b] happen.

Whether the story is true or not I find this the most compelling point of all. Even if you think you're god's gift to racing, the other guy could ruin your life by doing something extremely stupid.

I don't trust anyone enough to give them that kind of power over my destiny.

there isn't any racing on my street, its only 1/2 mile long with a speed limit of 15mph. But a 19 year old chick at the end of the block who does about 40mph down this road in her SUV, all along with small children playing about. One neighbor got pissed and went to the house, she was home alone with her boyfriend (parents were on vacation). boyfriend was all pissy so the police were called. Well, shortly after the parents came back that red SUV is nowhere to be found

And to be honest, if a ricy or built up older car is being raced, how many people would really let off the gas and take a loss? I remember back when I was in my early twenties and thought I was indestructable, and it would never happen to me. When I look back now I am amazed I am still here typing this message!
We all have stories of near-misses.
