Re-attaching rear view mirror

Got in my 2003 CL-s this afternoon to find my rear view mirror hanging by it's wiring harness. It detached from the windshield. I'm guessing the glue dry rotted after 7 years. Does Acura sell a reinstallation kit for this repair or do I have to buy the generic one that's available at all the autoparts stores.

Thanks,
Brando

Just get a generic one from an auto parts store, shouldn't be more than a few bucks

Just make sure you let the glue set for a while before trying to hang the mirror on it

most of those mirror glues dont work properly. u'll hit a pot hole and bam, the bracket comes off again.
you will have to go to home depot and there is special two step glue they sell that will have to be used.

first step is to spray part 1 on both surfaces.
second step is to put a drop or two of part 2 on the bracket and put it against the glass. Then let it dry for a whole day.

did that to mine and now, even if i wanted to, i cant take that bracket off without breaking the windshield.

Before you spray on the glass, u have to put the bracket there, and tape up the surroundings, then spray on the spot u wanna glue the bracket too. clean up teh surface of the bracket, then spray on it too. give it about 15 minutes to dry. once thats done, pour couple of drops of part 2 on the bracket, put it against the glass and push on it and hold it there for a few minutes. Once thats done, put a few pieces of tape over the bracket and the glass so it helps hold the bracket there. Leave it for a day and then remove all the tape and ur good to go.

Remember u can not do this on the matrix dots. U can either do it on the glass or the black part itself. but not on the dots.

any super glue should do the trick. just dont put on too much and make sure it's on the right way when u glue it on. leave it for a day then attach mirror.

This.

Be patient. Last time I messed with the mirror I broke the bracket off and took some glass with it.

meh, I had no problem with the 2 step mirror adhesive kit from 3m, i tried the little cheaper stick on first, that failed. I spent the extra couple bucks and got the 2 step adhesive (think it was like 4 bucks instead of 2 for the stick on) and my mirror and bracket have been up ever since in my 4runner

Glue did not work

I have 2003 TL and the mirror fell off because the glue dried up after so many years. So I bought "VersaChem - Rearview Mirror Adhesive" from O'Reilly Auto Parts store for $5. Followed all instructions to apply the glue proplerly to metal button and stick it to the windshield. I let it dry for few days. When I tried to put the mirror back on, the metal button just came off from the windshield.
I thought these glues are very strong. Did I get a cheap glue? Is there any other alternative?

I took the remaining product back to O'Reilly and they didnt take it back. They didnt have any other glue for this purpose as well.

Please share your thoughts.
Thanks.

I'm resurrecting this thread because I'm looking for a reliable adhesive to reattach the rearview mirror metal button to the windshield of my 2001 CL-S. I tried Permatex Extreme and followed the instructions to the letter. after 2 days the adhesive failed and the button/mirror fell off. I'd love to hear from anyone who's had success with an adhesive to reattach their mirror/button. The CL (and probably other Acuras from this period) has that black coating on the windshield where the mirror goes. Perhaps that makes a difference?

I sent this message to Permatex:

I used this product to reattach the rearview mirror/metal button on my 2001 Acura CL. I followed the directions perfectly. After 2 days the adhesive failed and the button/mirror fell off. The instructions say to clean the windshield area with the Cleaner/Activator Towelette. Should I have also cleaned the metal button with the Cleaner/Activator Towelette? I'm trying to decide whether to try again with this product or to try something else.

I got this prompt reply:

Definitely clean both the metal button and the glass surface with the cleaner/Activator towelette.
