Radio controlls transformed...
Hey, newbie here. Got my '02 CL Type S about a month and a half ago. This site rocks! Anyway, debating on removing stock Bose stereo with aftermarket unit. Is it possible... (far stretch here), to convert those up and down buttons into manu-matic shift buttons? Like paddle shifters do? Is the shift mechanism in the sports mode a set of buttons or is it cable driven? Feels to me like a button is being actuated. If so, that'd be bada$$ to either use the shifter or use the buttons on the wheel. for those race inspired moments anyway.

i think it would be very do-able. all the shifter is doing is activating a button, so there is no reason why the volume buttons couldn't be used in the same way.

Correct, the sport shift mode is all electronic; not cable driven. A little rewiring and it is done.
EDIT: Although the location of the radio buttons is far from ideal IMO for shifting.

Most people wouldn't want to ditch the radio controls IMO. It is just as easy for me to reach down to the shift knob as it would be for me to fumble around on the steering wheel looking for a small button.
Possible?
Worth it?

I believe the radio buttons on most cars work on a one wire system. I think Acura does that too. With this one-wire system, each button gives out a different resistance to the radio. The buttons will also be hard to rewire just because of the hub behind the steering wheel which allows it to turn. But if u can find a way to make it work....

the factory steering wheel contorl does come out one wire, but if you actually run new wire directly into that switch you can take it apart, and i'm sure it separates it into the 3 buttons.

I would think Running new wires into the steering wheel really isnt a good idea. After a few turns either the wires will snag or if you leave slack, they will unwind. The factory system uses a special hub with electrical connectors on the inside of it to run the air bag and steering wheel cruise and radio controls. I had to replace that unit on my old civic a few years ago, i'm pretty sure its the same on our acuras.

from what i remember the radio volume switch only has 2 wires. I think it works on by either sending + or - to each of the wires. Therefore actuating the open and close or in your case shift up or down. Very similar circuitry to folding mirros on an escalade. Correct me if i'm wrong someone i'm just throwing this out.
