dont get a detector when you first get your license, it will only encourage your speeding

well if he's already thinkin about gettin a detector im sure he's plannin on speedin anyways hah. valentine1 or escort8500 really are your best bet... but you said you dont want to spend too much money. cobra is a good route then, but you honestly get what you pay for when it comes to radar. the cobra detectors are almost nowhere near the escort8500 and v1.

i myself had almost that exact model of cobra youre lookin at for my first detector. then i finally saved up and bought an escort8500. it was worth every penny... so much better than the cobra. my advice would honestly be to wait and save up for a top of the line detector... bc youre gonna end up wanting a better detector anyways, so why not get a really good one to start with?

but if you really really dont want to spend too much money on a detector than yea go with a cheap cobra or whistler on ebay like youre lookin at.

well ive got the money, but i dont know if it is worth spending 200 more for the 8500. im not planing on driving too fast because there is a law in washington that u cant drive friends till 16.5 and u cant have a ticket, so i dont even know if i will get it, but i think i would need it for some backroads drivin to the cabin and stuff

First, don't speed.

Second, if you do speed, be happy with a V1.

Sig below...

Since your so young & a new driver, I'd be more concerned with learing how to drive in the real world. Last thing you want to do is something stupid that will get your license pulled. If you want the best the V1 or 8500 are the best. However a cheap one might be better for you since your a new driver.

However, if you are going to get one and don't want to spend over $100 that should be fine-

One thought, won't a white radar detector glare more in sun than a black unless you mount it high on the windshield?? Glare sucks-

Screw Cobra. They are a CB radio company. If you want a good unit at a good price get a Bell.

Belltronics is good, but for under $100 I think that cobra will suffice-

If you have any tendency to speed, it's worth the $400 to get the V1. Otherwise you get stuck with hundreds of dollars in tickets not to mention the higher insurance.

I held out for a long time, but in the end I should have bought the V1 a loooooong time ago. All but one of my speeding tickets could have been avoided.

no newly licensed 16 year old driver needs to be even thinking of a radar detector. you are only asking for trouble and putting other people at risk.....you are too young to be able to make a responsible decision about where and when to speed, not to mention you need to have more experience behind the wheel before you can safely drive at high speeds.

ohh dear yall lay off the kid ...if he speeds and gets caught he will pay the consequences just like any other person that does, just direct him in the right way to get a radar detector. Remember a radar detector wont always save you, if your goin 70 in a 35 and pass a cop your bound to have him turn around and pull you over for reckless driving(happened to me). its a matter of time... so if your going to speed try looking for open roads w/o pedestrians.
