Raced a Solara - Rims question and gas question
I have 18" Vault Jade's in chrome and i can't find out what they weigh anywhere. I was wondering if any of you guys could help me. I was also curious what stock CL-S rims weigh. I know we have talked about this before but i am to lazy to do a search. The only reason i ask is because today i lined up with a Solara V6 and i knew he wanted to race. So the light changed and we both hit the gas, he got a real good jump but a suburban jumped right out in front of me. So we didn't get a chance. And i was just curious if the weight of my wheels would affect my car that much, cause I should beable to beat solara's, am i right? This guy might have had Manual, i don't know. But im really curious now. Another problem i might have had was i got a friend of mine to fill up my gas tank for me and he used 87 octane. So i had a full tank of 87, my chrome rims and it was humid as hell today. Any thoughts???

Hard to tell, but the rims are likely 5-10 lbs heavier than stock. You should probably still be able to take a stock Solara manual, but you're going to need as good or better reaction time to do it. Those rims definitely hurt you.

but then again, you got geriatric people that shouldn't be driving anymore behind the wheels of brand new corvettes.

Seriously though..I know that the solara is the same, but I think more elder people buy our cars rather then young. Just my opinion...
Solara's aren't all that bad..my girl has one and I drive it almost everyday. I would say that if she had gotten the leather, then it would be just as comfortable as my cl and my sisters CL-S. Although yes the power isn't all that grand for the autos, they have a manual and a supercharger already..so it seems like at least people try to make their parts.

A stock CL-S should be able to beat a (supposedly) stock 5spd Solara, but you never know. The Acura only puts about 30 more hp to the wheels, and weighs 100 pounds more. I know of one totally stock Camry 5spd V6 with a top notch driver who got 15.0s out of it. Put a well driven Solara against a CL-S that is a little slow because of tune/heavy wheels/whatever, and you may have a Toyota win. Also, the Suburban may have ended the race before the CL-s could spend much time in the VTEC range.
As for availability of 5spd Solaras, any dealer can order one. Anybody who won't wait to get the car they want deserves to have whatever their dealer stocks.
I agree about the rarity of sc'd Camry/Solaras; there's probably not many out there. But if the Solara owner wanted to race a car known to be faster (like the CL-S), I'm thinking he may have reason for such confidence. Maybe he had the blower.

and you can't "order" a 5spd v6 solara 'cuz toyota only makes a certain number of them. the only thing the they can do is search other dealers for one and trade.
i had a friend who went through this and went to every toyota dealer within 50 miles, and none had one a v6 5spd available. and the best they could do was search more dealers (none of the dealers had 4cyl in manual either).
he ended up getting a 4cyl cougar for some reason.
One more thing you have to keep in mind when comparing the solara vs the CL-S is that the solara was built back when my 1st gen was the CL. I am not sure on this, but I think they built the current solara to compete with my CL and not the new ones..
The solara is also still in 1st gen form while the CL's that you are comparing it to are in the 2nd generation form..
It's not really a boat when I drive it, it feels alright. It does seem to roll a little bit more than my car in the turns, but otherwise it is the same. The springs feel kinda softer than mine also..

the solara isn't in it's first generation, it's in whatever generation the camry is in 'cuz that's what it is, a 2 door camry...the camry solara.
slap another name on the accord cpe, and we can have an accord luna...the luna, nemesis of the solara.

Having driven the CL-S and the Solara, I think the stock Solara is kind of a boat; it does roll too much. The Acura has as good a ride quality and much better handling. Adding the TRD rear anti-roll bar and stiffer tires to the Solara turn it into a very nicely balanced car, for a fwd car anyway.
Dammmmnnnnnn. I currently drive a Solara SLE and I find it to be great ride. Sure it isn't going to corner like a racer, but it handles pretty good for FWD and it will accel well enough to keep you in contention with some sportier cars.
Not that I go out looking for a run, but there is plenty of seperation and passing power for a car of it's class. I just wish Toyota had offered a 5-speed in the SLE.
I think the Solara is a great car and I like the look. And yes, this Cat has some dangling fruit, so it's not just a "chicks" car.
Anyway, my lease terminates in Sept., and I will be looking strongly at the CL-S for my next car. It would suck if when I get one if I were to someday loose to a stock Solara.

the reason you dont see many young people riding on CLs is because they are $30,000. many young guys are still in college and on a pizza and beer budget
Old farts have tons of money and now they can have a nice car they wish they had when they were young. Now that is just my opinion, correct me if im wrong.

First off, I'd be careful calling the Solara an ugly-ass car because, unless you all are blind, it shares a lot of styling cues with our cars. Ever see one coming at you head on--it's front end looks very similar and many menbers have mentioned this previously.
Secondly, thanks to whoever posted about rolling distance on 18's: if I remember correctly an 18inch rim with 235/40 tires is almost exactly the same overall dimaeter as our stock setup.
